現代語訳
和藤内が連れてきた唐人と共に、しばらく長崎に滞留していたところ、竹八も長崎へやって来た。唐人の中に虎の子を一匹連れて来た者があった。竹八は商売柄といい、欲しがる性格といい、古歌に「千里を走る」ような虎の子が欲しいという願いを、聞きたいやら聞かせたいやらと言う。これは歌の取り引きの話であるが、良い品物をやっと手づるを求めて唐人に近づくことになった。二貫ほどから値切ろうとするが、首を振って拒否するので、思い切って三貫文を出したところ、和藤内は三貫で負けることは大変懲りているので、また首を振って拒否する。

やむを得ず、その上に二百文を加えたところ、まだ首を振って拒否するので、相談の結果、三貫二百文というのはどうかと言う。安そうなものであるが、虎の子などはいくらぐらいという値打ちの知れないものである。見せ物にしてもそのくらいではと陰では思うけれども、猫を黄色に染めたようで、少し疑わしく受け取る。まず育ててみて、飼い主は御分別があると思う。

While Watōnai was staying in Nagasaki for a while with the Chinese people he had brought along, Takehachi also came to Nagasaki. Among the Chinese, there was one who had brought a tiger cub. Takehachi, both by the nature of his trade and his acquisitive character, desired a tiger cub that could "run a thousand ri" as mentioned in an old poem, wondering whether to listen to or tell such stories. This was a matter of negotiating over the verse, but he finally sought connections to approach the Chinese person for this fine item. He tried to bargain down from around two kan, but when the seller shook his head in refusal, he boldly offered three kan. However, since Watōnai had become quite wary of losing money at three kan, he too shook his head in refusal.

Having no choice, when he added another two hundred mon on top, the seller still shook his head in refusal, so after consultation, they asked how about three kan and two hundred mon. Though it seemed inexpensive, tiger cubs are items whose true value cannot be determined. Even for a sideshow, he thought privately that such a price was too low, but suspecting it might just be a cat dyed yellow, he received it with some doubt. He would try raising it first, and the buyer thought this showed good judgment.
