現代語訳
竹八は虎の子を買い求めて江戸へ下り、おふくろにも喜ばせた。珍しいものなので、大家様をはじめ、長屋の住人たちにも見せた。まず最初のうちは猫のように思って飼い、餌を食べさせていた。しかし、これは金儲けの種なので、無性に大事にして育てた。諺に「大事にするものを虎の子のようにする」というのは、この時から始まったのである。
物事にはいろいろと工夫があるもので、竹八が思いついて筍を食べさせてみると、美味しがって食べた。それからめきめきと育ったので、大いに喜び、朝も晩も筍を、辛子という部分は抜いて、半夏が入るまで食べさせ続けた。

Takehachi bought the tiger cub and went down to Edo, making his mother happy as well. Since it was such an unusual creature, he showed it to everyone from the landlord to the residents of the tenement house. At first, he treated it like a cat, feeding it regular food. However, since this was a source of income, he took extraordinarily good care of it and raised it carefully. The proverb "to treat something preciously like a tiger cub" began from this time.
There are various ways to be ingenious about things, and Takehachi had the idea to feed it bamboo shoots. When he tried this, the cub ate them with relish. From then on it grew remarkably, so he was greatly pleased and fed it bamboo shoots morning and evening, removing the spicy parts and feeding it until it was time to add the medicinal herb hange.
