いよいよ虎も育って、望み通り飛脚業を始めた。一日に千里行って千里帰る。もっとも、唐の一里は六丁一里で、日本の割合にして見れば、千里が百六十四里と二十四丁。行き戻りでは三百二十九里と十二丁。京都・大坂は日帰りは楽で、讃岐あたりが一晩泊まりとなる。何か差し置き、銀相場・米相場の頼みで、初日から商売を成すようになった。

However, one Chinese ri equals six chō to one ri, and when converted to Japanese measurements, a thousand ri equals 164 ri and 24 chō. For a round trip, that's 329 ri and 12 chō. Kyoto and Osaka were easy day trips, while Sanuki would require an overnight stay. With various urgent requests for silver market rates and rice market information, business was thriving from the very first day.

Going a thousand ri and returning a thousand ri was nothing extraordinary. Realizing this was no small matter but a major issue he hadn't considered, and finding his own judgment inadequate, he decided to consult with someone who seemed wise.
