殿にまいりたれはまた【まだ】かうしもさなから【そのまま】む
めのか【梅の香】おかしきをみいたしてものしたまふ【中から眺めておられる】よ
きおりかなとおもひて御ことのねいかにま
さり侍らむと思給へらるゝよのけはひにさ
そはれ侍りてなんこゝろあはたゝしきいて
いり【出入り】にえうけたまはらぬこそくちをしけれ
といへはあはれしる人こそあなれ【いてほしい】もゝしき【宮中】
にゆきかふ人のきくはかりやはとてめしよ
するもあいなう【よそながら】いかゝきゝたまはんとむねつ
ふるほのかにかきならし給ふおかしうきこ
現代語訳
殿にまいったところ、まだそのままで梅の香が美しく、中から眺めておられる。良い機会だなと思って、「お琴の音はいかにまさっていることでしょうと思われるような夜の気配に誘われまして、心せわしない出入りのために十分にお聞きすることができないのが残念でございます」と言うと、「ああ、風情を理解する人がいてほしいものだ。宮中を行き来する人が聞くだけでどうしようか」と言って召し寄せるのも興ざめで、どのようにお聞きになるだろうかと胸をどきどきさせながら、かすかに琴をかき鳴らしなさる音が美しく聞こえる
英語訳
When she went to the lord's quarters, he was still there as before, with the beautiful fragrance of plum blossoms, gazing out from within. Thinking this was a good opportunity, she said, "I was drawn by the atmosphere of this night that makes me think how excellent your koto playing must be, but because of my restless coming and going, I regrettably cannot listen properly." He replied, "Ah, if only there were someone who truly understood such refined feelings. What good would it do if only those who frequent the court were to listen?" Summoning her seemed rather tactless, and with her heart pounding wondering how he would listen, the faint sound of her plucking the koto strings could be heard beautifully.
