現代語訳
今来たかのようにして御笛なども吹き興じていらっしゃると、大臣は例によって聞き過ごしなさらないで、高麗笛を取り出してくださった。とても上手でいらっしゃるので、たいそう面白く吹かれる。御琴をお召しになって、邸内でもこの方面に心得のある人々に弾かせなさる。中務の君は格別に琵琶を弾いたが、頭中将は思いをかけていた女性から故意に離れ続けて、ただこの源氏の君の滅多にない御魅力の親しみやすさを、とてもお離れ申し上げることができず、自然と隠れもなく有名になって、大宮などもよろしからず思われる。
英語訳
Acting as if they had just arrived, they played their flutes with enjoyment. The Minister, as usual, did not let this pass unnoticed and brought out a Korean flute. Being very skillful, he played most beautifully. He called for a koto and had people in the mansion who were knowledgeable in this art play it. Nakatukasa no Kimi played the biwa with particular skill, but Tō no Chūjō, deliberately keeping away from the woman he had feelings for, simply could not tear himself away from this rare charm and affability of Genji no Kimi. Naturally, this became well-known and unconcealed, and even Ōmiya and others viewed this unfavorably.
