なれなむもさすかに心ほそくおもひみたれ
たり君たちはありつる【例の】きんのね【琴の音】をおほ
しいてゝあはれけなりつるすまゐの
さまなともやうかへて【事情が変われば】おかしうおもひつゝけ
あらまし事に【将来の予測だが】おかしうらうたき【美しくて心惹かれ大事にしてやりたい】人のさ
てとし月をかさねゐたらむときみそめて
いみしう心くるしくは人にもゝてさはかる
現代語訳
お思いになったので、物思わしく見苦しい心地がして興ざめな様子で寄り臥していた。まったくお目にかからない所に身を隠してしまおうかとも、さすがに心細く思い乱れていた。君たちは先ほどの琴の音を思い出して、情趣深く感じたあの住まいの様子なども、事情が変われば趣深く思い続けることであろう。想像の話だが、美しくて心惹かれ大事にしてやりたい人がそうして年月を重ねて住んでいたとしたら、君は初めて見て、ひどく心苦しく思うだろうが、人にも持て余される。
英語訳
Having thought thus, feeling melancholy and unsightly, she lay down in a disheartened manner. Though she considered withdrawing to a place where she would never be seen at all, she still felt lonely and troubled. The young nobles, recalling the sound of the koto from earlier, would continue to find that dwelling and its poignant atmosphere charming if circumstances were to change. In imagination, if a beautiful and endearing person whom one would want to cherish had lived there through the years, when a gentleman first encountered her, though he might feel deeply troubled, others would find her burdensome.
