現代語訳
その気配は忍やかで、えひの香がとても馴染み深く香り立って、おっとりとしているのを感じて、「やはりそうだな」とお思いになる。長年思い続けてきた様子などを、とてもよくお話しになり続けるけれど、より親密な御返事は全くない。「ひどいやり方だ」とお嘆きになる。
「何度もあなたの沈黙に負けてしまうだろう。物を言わないでいてくれと、言わない約束に」とおっしゃりもして、「事が掛け違って辛い」とおっしゃる。

Her presence is subtle and refined, with the fragrance of "ehi no ka" (a blended incense) wafting forth most familiarly, and sensing her gentle composure, he thinks, "Yes, just as I thought." He continues to speak very eloquently about how he has been thinking of her for years, but there is absolutely no intimate response from her. "What a cruel way to behave," he laments.
"How many times must I be defeated by your silence? You who promised not to speak by remaining silent," he says, and "Things have gone awry and it is painful," he declares.
A young woman called Jijū, who is the lady's foster sister and lady-in-waiting, being rather forward in manner, thinks this situation most worrying and unbearable to watch.
