現代語訳
「朝日が差すと軒の氷柱は溶けるのに、どうしてつららが凍って固まるのでしょうか」とおっしゃって立ち去ろうとしたが、ただもうとうち笑いになって、口元が重そうなのもとても愛らしいので、（源氏は結局）立ち去りなさった。お車を寄せてある中門がとてもひどく傾いて今にも倒れそうで、夜目には目立たないものの、万事につけて人目につかないよう隠している事が多いのであった。とても哀れで寂しく、ひどく荒れ果てているところに、松に雪だけが暖かそうに降り積もって、山里のような心地がして物悲しいのに、あの女房たちが言っていた「葎の門」というのは、このような所のことだったのだろうか。

The place was most pitiful and lonely, severely dilapidated, with only snow piling gently on the pine trees, giving the feeling of a mountain village and creating a melancholy atmosphere. He wondered if this was the kind of place those court ladies had meant when they spoke of "the gate overgrown with mugwort."
