現代語訳
私（源氏）も描き加えなさる。髪がとても長い女性を描きなさって、鼻に紅をつけて御覧になると、形だけを描いたものでも見るのも嫌な様子をしている。自分のお顔の美しい容貌に映っているのは、絵もとても美しいのを御覧になって、手ずから、この赤い鼻を描きつけて彩色して御覧になると、このように良い顔でも、そのようになってしまっては見苦しいに違いない。姫君は見て、ひどくお笑いになる。「私がこのように不恰好になってしまったら」と言うと、どのようなものだろうとおっしゃると、「それは情けないことでしょう」
英語訳
He (Genji) also added his own drawings. He drew a woman with very long hair, and when he put rouge on her nose and looked at it, even though it was just a sketch, it looked disagreeable to behold. Seeing that his own beautiful countenance was reflected in the painting, which was also quite lovely, he deliberately painted this red nose and colored it. Even such a beautiful face would surely look unsightly if it became like that. The young princess looked at it and laughed heartily. When she said, "If I were to become so unseemly like this," and he asked what that would be like, she replied, "That would be most pitiful."
