洋中の各地で鯨漁をして、同年二月にティモール島のうち小名でポルトガル支配下のバタンという所へ船を繋ぎました。その島は日本の九州ほどの島で、港のような所々はありませんが、海岸に人家がまばらにありました。薪水や食物を買い入れて三十日ほど滞船し、同所を出帆しました。同年九月、初めてニューベッドフォードへ帰船しました。
鯨漁船の水夫賃金については定まりはなく、漁の成否によって人員数も異なります。鯨油十六樽につき船頭へ一樽受け取り、水夫はそれぞれ割合をもって受け取ります。私の賃金の銀員数は覚えておりませんが、その割合で申し受けました。前述のハーウェイ船頭の宅に帰宿したところ、船頭は先だって帰船していたとのことで、前回同様に畑作などの世話をしていました。その間、その船頭より日本の四文銭並びに銅小銭取り交ぜて二十文もらい受けて所持していたところ、珍しい品物なのでニューベッドフォードで土地の者が欲しがったため、追々与えてしまい、残りは四文銭一文、小銭三文を所持しております。
【注記】日本通用銭の件について調べたところ、前述の船頭ウィリアム・H・フィットフィールドが先だって鯨漁に出た際、他の鯨漁船が日本江戸の沖合で日本の漂流人を助け上げた時にもらい受けたもので、その乗組の者より船頭へくれたものを所持していたということで、万次郎がもらい受けたとのことです。その漂流の始末等については分からないと申していました。

We conducted whaling in various places in the ocean, and in February of the same year, we moored at a place called Batan under Portuguese control, which was a small locality within Timor Island. The island was about the size of Kyushu in Japan. There were no proper harbor facilities, but houses were scattered sparsely along the coast. We purchased firewood, water, and food, stayed for about thirty days, and then departed from there. In September of the same year, we returned to New Bedford for the first time.
Regarding wages for whaling ship sailors, there are no fixed rates, and the crew size varies depending on the success or failure of the catch. For every sixteen barrels of whale oil, the captain receives one barrel, and the sailors each receive their share according to their respective proportions. I don't remember the exact amount of my wages in silver, but I received it according to that proportion. I returned to stay at the home of the aforementioned Captain Harvey, who had already returned from his voyage. As before, I helped with farm work and other tasks. During this time, the captain gave me twenty mon of Japanese currency, a mixture of four-mon coins and small copper coins. Since these were rare items, the local people in New Bedford were interested in them, so I gradually gave them away. I still possess one four-mon coin and three small coins.
[Note] When I inquired about the Japanese currency, I learned that the aforementioned Captain William H. Whitfield had obtained them during a previous whaling voyage when another whaling ship rescued Japanese castaways off the coast of Edo, Japan. The crew members had given them to the captain, who then gave them to Manjirō. He said he didn't know the details of that shipwreck incident.
