**[Right Page — Upper Section]** *(Continued from the previous page — On Determining the Height of a Standing Tree Using Its Shadow)* Stand it where the tree's shadow falls on the ground, and measure by observing that shadow. For example, stand a walking stick upright and observe its shadow: depending on the time of day, the shadow will naturally be longer or shorter. Measure the length in *shaku* and *sun* of that shadow, and keep in mind this measurement as the scale of the object you have placed before you. Then, for the shadow that the standing tree casts onto the ground— --- **[Left Page — Upper Section]** —count out how many *shaku* and *sun* it measures along the ground. Using the shadow length of the reference object as a unit of scale, determine how many *shaku* tall the reference object appears to be. Afterward, convert this back to the actual height of the reference object, and that will give you the true height of the standing tree. Alternatively, for a cliff or bank— *(Continues in the lower section / next page)* --- **[Right Page — Lower Section]** *(Continued from the previous page — On the Method for Easy Childbirth)* —and so: on a small piece of paper, write on the inside as follows: "鬼 鬼 / 女 女 女 子成就" (*Oni oni / Onna onna onna — child's attainment*). Seal the outer wrapping as usual, write "御守" (*O-mamori* / "Amulet") on the front, and on the back seal write a single character "安" (*an* / "Peace" / "Safety"). This is the most secret of secrets. --- **On Charms to Prevent Lightning from Striking** "*Akata*" 〔Affix to the eastern pillar〕 "*Setsuteiro*" 〔Affix to the southern pillar〕 "*Shūdakō*" 〔Affix to the western pillar〕 "*Sodamani*" 〔Affix to the northern pillar〕 Write these charms on paper and affix them to the four pillars (posts) of the house in each cardinal direction. Chant aloud: "*Akata, Setsuteiro, Shūdakō, Sodamani*" — seven times. Write "*Ryōhōsha*" — --- **[Left Page — Lower Section]** —and affix it to the very center of the ceiling. Then chant the following verse seven times: "*Unrai ko seiden* 雲雷鼓掣電 — Thunder clouds rumble and lightning flashes; *Kōbaku ju taiū* 降雹澍大雨 — Hail falls and great rains pour down; *Nenpi Kannon riki* 念彼観音力 — By the power of Kannon whom we call to mind, *Ōji toku shōsan* 応時得消散 — In that very moment, all disperses and is extinguished." If one does all of this, lightning will never strike the house. --- **On a Method for Revealing a Thief** - Take the kelp (*kombu*) that was offered to the *Toshitoku-shin* (the deity of the year's auspicious direction), burn it to a black char (*kurodaki*), put it into sake, and have all persons under suspicion drink that sake. Whoever committed the theft will immediately develop a swollen cheek — a wondrous effect. --- **On Retrieving an Object That Has Fallen into a Well** - Into the bottom of the well — *(Continues on the next page)*
