**[Left Page — Upper Section]** **A Method for Determining Where Water Lies When Digging a Well** - When wishing to dig a well, and seeking to determine where the water springs up, one should insert the tail feathers of a *yamadori* (copper pheasant) into the ground at various spots. After two or three *toki* (approximately four to six hours), examine them: if there is water beneath, the bird's tail feathers will droop downward. In ground where there is no water, the inserted tail feathers will not droop— *(Continues on the next page)* --- **[Right Page — Lower Section]** *(Continued from the previous page — "A Method for Creating Mottled Patterns on Bamboo")* In ceramics, bamboo, and wood as well, patterns can all be produced using this same preparation. --- **A Method for Extracting a Needle Broken Off Inside the Skin** - Char *sanzō* (酸棗, *Ziziphus jujuba* var. *spinosa*, sour jujube seeds) to a black ash and have the patient drink it dissolved in warmed sake. If the needle is in the upper part of the body, administer it after meals; if in the lower part of the body, administer it before meals. There will be an itching sensation at the forehead, and it is a wondrous thing that the needle will promptly emerge from the very spot where it entered. Even if many days have passed since the needle broke in, there is no case in which it will fail to come out. --- **A Method for Preventing the Hands and Feet from Freezing in Cold Winter Months, Snow, and Ice** - Soak the berries of *shikimi* (樒, Japanese star anise, *Illicium anisatum*) in unrefined sake (*kizake*) for three days, then in the shade— *(Continues on the next page)*
