**A Method for Simultaneously Determining the Quality of the Water at a Site When Digging a Well**
- On the ground at the place where one intends to dig a well, place a red-lacquered round tray face-down and leave it for one night. The following morning, examine the dew that has collected on the inside of the tray. If the water of that location is good, the dew will be clean and white, without the slightest cloudiness. If the water of that location is bad, the dew collected inside the tray will appear cloudy. By this means, one should judge the quality of the water at that location.

**A Method for Eliminating Hunger**
- Wash five *shō* of soybeans, steam them three times, and remove the husks. Soak three *shō* of hemp seeds (*asanomi*) in water for one night, steam them three times, and when the hemp seeds open, remove their husks. Pound both ingredients together thoroughly, shape them into balls like rice cakes, place them in a steaming basket (*koshiki*), and steam from *shoya* (around 8 p.m.) until midnight (*yahan*). Remove from the *koshiki* at the Hour of the Tiger (*tora no toki*, around 4 a.m.), spread them out to dry in the sun the following midday, and once dry, grind into a powder.

**[Left Page — Lower Section]**
Eat this powder until fully satiated, and do not eat any other food whatsoever. If one eats a full portion just once at the start, one will not go hungry for seven days. After seven days, if one again eats a full portion, one will not go hungry for forty-nine days. After another forty-nine days, if one eats again, one will not go hungry for three hundred days. After three hundred days, if one eats again, one will not go hungry for two thousand four hundred days. It continues in this manner indefinitely. If one's mouth becomes dry, one should regularly drink a decoction of hemp seeds (*asanomi*). If one wishes to return to eating normal meals, one should grind three *gō* of *tōkishi* (winter mallow seeds, *Malva verticillata*) into a powder, decoct it in hot water, allow it to cool, and take it as a draught. The aforementioned preparation will pass through the bowels in the color of gold. After that, one may eat normal meals without the slightest harm. This method—
