**A Secret Method for Preserving Bamboo Shoots (*Takenoko*)**
- Leaving the bamboo shoots in their husks, cut the base, and pierce through to the tip with a bamboo skewer to make a hole. Pass them once through boiling water, remove them, and stand them upright; then turn them upside down. Fill the interior (the hole) with roasted salt, then wrap them in rush matting (*komo*) and set aside. When needed, remove the husks, cut to suitable size, draw out the salt, and use in clear soup (*shunkān*). It will taste just as if the bamboo shoots were freshly harvested.

- Being very careful not to damage the wick of the candle, insert into the center: Mercury wax (*suiginrō*) [1 *bu*], White snake (*hakuja*, white snake fat or bile) [5 *bu*], Borneol camphor (*ryūnō*) [3 *bu*]. Knead these together with mercury, insert the mixture into the wick, and pack the base (bottom end) so the preparation does not fall out. The candle can then be kept burning indefinitely. That a candle burns suspended in mid-air is a truly wondrous thing.
