【Right Page, Upper Section】 [Figure present] Prick the spot indicated in the figure near the base of the toenail slightly, and let a little blood out — the condition will heal just as it is. Method for Weaving Echigo Chijimi (Echigo Crepe Fabric) - Use hemp thread (asa-ito) as the warp, and for the weft, take true ramie thread (maso no ito) and twist it very thoroughly. Insert a bobbin (kuda) into the spindle (tsumu), wind the twisted thread directly onto this bobbin, and make a water-twist (mizu-yori). After that, weave it down just as one would weave ordinary cloth, 【Left Page, Upper Section】 perform a mid-bleaching (naka-zarashi), and then pour boiling hot water over it, whereupon it will shrink [to form the characteristic crepe texture]. 【Right Page, Lower Section】 Method for Keeping Fish Meat for a Long Time During the Hot Season - Take mandarin orange (mikan) blossoms, dry them in the shade, and grind them into a powder, storing it away. In summer, when boiling fish, add about one spoonful of this powder and boil it — the fish will not spoil even if left for about half a month. Alternatively, adding a small amount of calcined alum (myōban no yakikaeshi) when boiling is also effective. The fish will not spoil for several days. Method for Storing Fruits and Nuts for a Long Time Without Changing Colour - Fill a new jar or crock with "cold-season water" (kan no mizu) drawn in the twelfth month. When the fruits come into season, add a small amount of copper rust (rokushō / verdigris: copper carbonate) to the cold-season water and immerse the fruits in it for storage. The colour will not change at all, no matter how long, and they will be just as if they were freshly picked in season. This method is suitable for green plums (ao-ume), loquats (biwa), 【Left Page, Lower Section】 apples (ringo), jujubes (natsume), grapes (budō), lotus seeds (hasu), water chestnuts (hishi), muskmelons (makuwa-uri), and all other kinds of fruit and nuts. Method for Storing Pears - Take a large pear that is not damaged in the slightest, insert the stem of the pear's calyx (heso / hozō) into the centre of a daikon radish that has no pithy core (su), wrap the top in paper, and place it in a warm location. The pear will not spoil. Mandarins and similar fruits that still have a stem attached to the calyx can also be preserved well using this same method. Method for Keeping Peaches Until Winter - Boil wheat gluten (shōfu) until it is like porridge, add just a little salt, and [continued on the next page]
