【Right Page, Upper Section】 *(Continued from previous page: the stone rubbing method)*
The edges and outlines of the characters must be done with great care and attention.
A Method for Boring Holes in Stone
- Take a pinch of powdered *sanzashi* (Chinese hawthorn / *Crataegus*), place it on the spot in the stone where you wish to make a hole, apply moxa cauterization (*kyū*), and then bore into it by turning a drill (*kiri*). An ordinary drill cannot bore through stone — there is a secret tradition (*hiden*) regarding the drill. The method for making the drill is as follows:
【Left Page, Upper Section】
Catch a slug (*namekujiri*), shave a bamboo stick to a point in the shape of a drill, skewer the slug onto the tip, and dry it in the sun. Then shave it further to a sharp point like a drill. Using this drill to bore will open a hole in stone with wondrous effect.
【Right Page, Lower Section】
- When visiting a household afflicted with epidemic disease (*jiei*), write the character 「坎」(*kan*, one of the Eight Trigrams) on your palm using the middle finger of your right hand, then clench your fist tightly as you enter. The disease will not be transmitted to you. Furthermore, if someone has just fallen ill with epidemic disease for the first time, wash their clothing and steam it inside a *koshiki* (a wooden or clay steaming vessel). The illness will not spread to others in the household.
A Method for Driving Out *Okori* (Intermittent Fever / Malaria)
- Take one pear, face south, and inhale one breath. Recite the following incantation over the pear:
*"In the south there is a pond; within the pond there is water; within the water there are fish — three heads, nine tails — they do not eat the five grains of humankind; they eat only the demon of fever (*gyakkuki*)."*
Recite this three times, then blow upon the pear. Write the three characters 「勅殺鬼」(*choku satsu ki* — "By Imperial Decree, Slay the Demon") on the pear,
【Left Page, Lower Section】
and have the patient eat it on the day before the expected onset of the fever attack. The fever will unfailingly be driven out.
A Method for Stopping Toothache *(A Charm for Treating Tooth Decay)*
- Write an incantation on paper to about the size of a finger, fold it into seven layers, and using an iron nail, drive it into a high place on a pillar, nailing through the top stroke of the character 「虫」(*mushi*, "worm/insect"). Then recite the spell seven times, and the (toothache) will be cured on the spot.
The incantation reads as follows:
*"This worm is the worm of Kōnan (Jiangnan); it has come to gnaw upon my teeth. There is a nail above the rafter-head; for all eternity it shall not return home."*
Write this in two lines as described above.
