A Method for Writing Pictures or Characters upon Water
- Take alum (*myōban*), adzuki beans (*azuki*), and a small amount of phellodendron bark (*ōbaku*). Grind all three ingredients finely into powder, wrap them in cloth or silk, moisten this bundle with water, and press it damply (*jikujiku*) across the surface of a sheet of paper. Then grind ink until it is thick and dark,

and write whatever you wish — pictures or characters — onto that paper. Next, place the paper face-up on the surface of water. Using two thin sticks resembling toothpicks, press down the four edges of the paper to submerge it, then draw the paper aside — and only the written pictures and characters will remain floating on the surface of the water.
【Right Page, Lower Section】
- Write the six characters 「天皇皇地皇皇」(*Tennō-kō, Chikō-kō*) on the floor of the hearth (*kamado*), and an infant's nighttime crying will stop — the effect is truly wondrous.
A Method to Prevent Swallows from Coming
- Write the character 「戌」(*inu*, the Dog) near a swallow's nest and affix it there; the swallows will not return.
A Method to Prevent Slugs from Coming
- On the fifth day of the fifth month, write the character 「滑」(*namerakani*, meaning "slippery/smooth") and post it up; slugs will not come.
A Method to Drive Away Horseflies (*Abu*)
- Write the two characters 「風煙」(*fūen*, "wind and smoke") on paper and affix it below a window or at the base of a wall.
A Method to Drive Away Snakes and Vipers *(same charm applies to both)*
- On the fifth day of the fifth month, at the Hour of the Horse (noon), write the two characters 「儀方」(*gihō*) on paper and paste it upside-down at the base of a household pillar. Snakes will not enter.
- Write 「儀方」on a small roof tile or similar object and place it in the garden; snakes will be frightened and depart.
- When entering a mountain forest, silently recite 「儀方」in your mouth. You will suffer no harm from snakes or venomous serpents (*kuchihami*).
A Method to Drive Away Centipedes
- On the fifth day of the fifth month, at the Hour of the Horse, write the character 「茶」(*cha*, "tea") on paper using cinnabar (*shūsha*) and paste it upside-down on a pillar. Furthermore, grind ink using water that flows northward, write the character 「竜」(*ryū*, "dragon"), and place it on top of the pillars of all four directions —
