Although not many years have passed since this work first came into circulation, it has spread widely throughout the world, and the printing blocks have already reached the point of being worn out. We have therefore taken this opportunity to greatly expand the number of characters included, while devising a method for looking up characters that is swift and free of inconvenience, and have newly carved the blocks and distributed the work widely throughout the realm. The new title is as follows:
**A Complete Reference for Immediate Use in Urgent Situations**
***Taisei Shōji-tsū*** [Great Compendium of Correct Characters]
(All seven volumes consolidated into one; pocket edition)
The above was compiled by gathering several thousand works spanning Shinto writings, Japanese texts, Confucian classics, medical books, poetry and prose anthologies, letter-writing manuals (*sekitoku*), poetry collections, linked verse and haiku (*renhai*), as well as miscellaneous drama, fiction, Buddhist scriptures, and the writings of the various philosophical schools (*shoshi hyakka*). From among these, useful characters were extracted, each furnished with its reading (on-kun pronunciation) or meaning, newly edited and greatly expanded. There are many character dictionaries (*jibiki*) already in print, but compared to this work, they do not reach even one-tenth of its scope—as will be plainly apparent even from comparing a single section (*mon-bu*). The reader should know that this work gathers characters at ten times the efficiency of previous dictionaries, covering without omission all the practical needs of both elegant (*ga*) and vernacular (*zoku*) usage in daily life. Those who pursue the study of Japanese and Chinese learning, and those who compose poetry, prose, letters, *waka*, or *renhai*, should keep this work at hand as a safeguard against lapses of memory, even if they are already accomplished experts. The speed of character lookup and the details of what has been added are noted separately.

***Hayabiki Shōji-tsū***: *Taihon Zōho Shin-Jibiki* [Complete Edition] (Quick-Reference Compendium of Correct Characters: Expanded Large-Format Character Dictionary)
Since characters (*kanji*) are looked up by stroke count, it is extremely fast to find any character. For this reason it is entitled "Quick Reference" (*hayabiki*). For detailed instructions on the fast method of looking up characters, refer to this companion volume. The appendix includes an *iroha*-order index, the Thousand Character Classic in four scripts (*shitai senjimon*), and other essential character reference material.

***Iryō Shūhō Kiku*** [Rules and Standards for Medical Treatment and Prescriptions]
(Complete, 1 volume; medicine-pouch size)
This is a detailed record of prescriptions, dosage adjustments, and related matters—a work on treatment by Master Dōsan. Even those who are not physicians need not fear making errors with medicines for the sick, if they follow this book.
---
***Inban Hiketsu*** [Secret Principles of Personal Seals]
(Complete, 1 volume)
Personal seals (*hanko*/*inban*) are objects of great importance to every person, for upon them may depend the fortune or misfortune of one's entire life. This work therefore explains the matter in thorough detail, illustrates even the mudras (*in*) of Shakyamuni Buddha, and clarifies the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of all types of personal seals.

***Dai Nihon Dōchū Kōtei Saiken-ki*** [Detailed Record of Travel Routes and Distances throughout Greater Japan]
(Complete folding book; pocket edition)
From Korea in the west to Ezo (Hokkaido) and Matsumae in the east, this work records without omission the road guides for each province, the stipend yields (*chigyo-daka*) of the various lords, their family crests, post-station relay fees as officially set, and famous places, historic sites, shrines, and temples. By consulting this volume, one may survey all of Japan in order, without ever having to travel there in person.
