もろこし趙（てう）の邯鄲（かんたん）といふ
所に羅敷（らふ）といふ美女（びぢよ）あり
花（はな）のかんばせ霞（かすみ）のまゆ
ずみ嬋娟（せんけん）たるよそほひ
ならぶかたなしある時
川（かは）のほとりにて桑（くわ）を
とり居（ゐ）けるに往来（ゆきゝ）の人
羅敷（らふ）が美色（びしよく）に
見（み）とれ恍惚（くはうこつ）とし
て神（しん）を飛（とば）し街（ちまた）に
躊躇（ちうちよ）しける
折（をり）ふし趙王（てうわう）狩（かり）に
出給ひしに車（くるま）の
内（うち）より羅敷（らふ）を
見給ひ宮中（きうちう）に入て
妃（きさき）[に備んと] 召（め）され

かたく辞（じ）して
節義（せつぎ）を守（まも）りける

現代語訳

中国の趙の邯鄲という所に羅敷という美女がいました。花のような美しい顔、霞のような眉、美しく装った姿は並ぶ者がありませんでした。ある時、川のほとりで桑を摘んでいたところ、往来の人々は羅敷の美貌に見とれ、うっとりとして心を奪われ、街で立ち止まって見つめていました。

折しも趙王が狩りにお出かけになった時、車の中から羅敷をご覧になり、宮中に入れて妃にしようとお召しになりましたが、彼女は固く辞退して節義を守ったということです。

羅敷は上手に桑を採る
　桑を採る、城南の隅で
青い糸を籠の縄とし
　桂の枝を籠の鉤とする

英語訳

In a place called Handan in the state of Zhao in China, there was a beautiful woman named Luofu. With a face like a flower, eyebrows like mist, and graceful appearance, none could match her beauty. One day, while she was picking mulberries by the riverside, passersby were captivated by Luofu's beauty, became entranced and lost their spirits, lingering hesitantly in the streets.

At that time, the King of Zhao went out hunting and saw Luofu from inside his carriage. He summoned her to enter the palace to serve as his consort, but she firmly declined and maintained her integrity.
