左近少将（さこんのせうしやう）とあるを始（はじめ）て
追々 昇進（しようしん）し柏木の巻に
権大納言（ごんだいなごん）となりてうせぬ
此うたは辞世（じせい）に女三宮（によさんのみや）へ
おくれる也心は火葬（く▢）さうの烟（けふり）の
行（ゆく）へもなく空（そら）に消（きえ）うする
身と成とも魂（たましひ）は残りて君

に右大臣（うだいじん）兼（けん）右近大将（うこんのだいしやう）となる
此うたは兄（あに）柏木のうせたるを
かなしみてよめる也心は恨（うら）
めしき事かな墨（すみ）の衣（ころも）を
誰（たれ）にきよとてか定（さだ）まりの
齢（よは）ひをも待（また）ず盛（さか）りの身
にて死（しに）うせけんと也 霞（かすみ）の衣
に墨の衣をかねたり喪（も）に
こもる人はにび色（いろ）とて黒（くろ）ね

現代語訳
【右丁 上段】
父は致仕の大臣、母は二条の大臣の娘である。「乙女」の巻で左近少将とあるのを始めとして、次々と昇進し、「柏木」の巻で権大納言となって亡くなった。この歌は辞世の歌として女三宮へ送ったものである。歌の意味は、火葬の煙のように行く先もなく空に消えてしまう身となっても、魂は残ってあなたの側を離れることはないだろう、ということである。

【左丁 上段】
父は致仕の大臣で、柏木の同母の弟である。「初音」巻に弁の少将と見えて、ついに「竹河」の巻で右大臣兼右近大将となる。この歌は兄柏木が亡くなったことを悲しんで詠んだものである。歌の意味は、恨めしいことだなあ。誰に墨染めの衣を着よと定められた寿命も待たず、盛りの身で死んでしまったのだろうか、ということである。霞の衣に墨の衣を掛けている。喪に籠る人は鈍色といって黒鼠の衣を用いる。これを墨染めというのである。

【Right Page, Upper Section】
His father was the Retired Minister, and his mother was the daughter of the Nijō Minister. Beginning with his appearance as Left Palace Guard Minor Captain in the "Otome" (Maiden) chapter, he was promoted successively and became Provisional Major Counselor in the "Kashiwagi" chapter before dying. This poem was sent to the Third Princess as his death poem. The meaning is: Even though I become a body that vanishes into the sky like funeral pyre smoke with no destination, my soul will remain and never leave your vicinity.

【Left Page, Upper Section】
His father was the Retired Minister, and he was Kashiwagi's younger brother by the same mother. He appears as Minor Captain Ben in the "Hatsune" (First Warbler) chapter and eventually becomes Right Minister and Right Palace Guard General in the "Takekawa" (Bamboo River) chapter. This poem was composed in grief over the death of his elder brother Kashiwagi. The meaning is: How resentful it is! Who was told to wear mourning robes of ink-black? Without waiting for his destined lifespan, he died in the prime of life. He plays on "robes of mist" and "robes of ink." Those in mourning wear what is called "dull color"—black-gray robes. This is called "ink-dyed."
