新帝（しんてい）の皇子（わうじ）にて御母（おんはゝ）は明（あか）
石中宮（しのちうぐう）也 匂宮巻（にほふみやのまき）に元服（げんぶく）
して兵部卿（へうぶけう）に成（なり）給（たま）ふ此歌（このうた）
は宇治（うぢ）の花見（はなみ）におはしまし
ける時（とき）優婆塞宮（うばそくのみや）より○
山 風（かぜ）にかすみ吹（ふき）とく声（こゑ）はあ
れど隔（へだち）て見ゆる遠（をち）のしら
なみと詠（よみ）贈（おく）り給へる御 返（かへ）し
也心は川のあちこちと隔ち
て汀（みぎは）の波（なみ）に路（みち）はなくとも
風に吹かよへとなりさて今（いま）

現代語訳
【右丁 上段】
新帝の皇子で、御母は明石中宮である。匂宮巻で元服して兵部卿になられる。この歌は宇治の花見にいらっしゃった時、優婆塞宮から「山風にかすみ吹き解く声はあれど隔てて見ゆる遠の白波」と詠み送られた御返歌である。歌の心は、川のあちこちと隔てて汀の波に道はなくとも、風に吹き通ってほしい、ということである。つまり、今すぐ直接お会いできなくとも、心は通わせてください、という意味である。

【左丁 上段】
優婆塞宮の御娘で、総角姫君の同母の妹である。総角巻で匂宮と契りを結び、早蕨巻で同宮の二条院に迎えられて御子を生まれる。この歌はまだ宇治の里に住んでいらっしゃった頃、匂宮の御許から「眺むるは同じ雲井をいかなれば朧つかなさをそうる時雨ぞ」と詠んで送られた返歌である。歌の心は、都に時雨が降る頃は山里には霰が降って、物思いに朝夕眺める空も心も暗くなって侘しい、ということである。

【Right Page, Upper Section】
He is a prince of the new emperor, and his mother is Akashi Chūgū. In the Niou Miya (The Fragrant Prince) chapter, he comes of age and becomes Minister of War. This poem is his reply to a poem sent by the Lay Priest Prince when he visited Uji for cherry blossom viewing: "Though the mountain wind's voice disperses the mist, the distant white waves appear separated from us." The heart of the poem is: even though the waves on the shore separate us here and there across the river with no path between, may the wind still blow and connect us. In other words, even if we cannot meet directly right now, please let our hearts communicate.

She is the daughter of the Lay Priest Prince and the younger sister of Princess Agamaki by the same mother. In the Agamaki chapter she becomes intimate with Prince Niou, and in the Sawarabi (Bracken Shoots) chapter she is welcomed to the same prince's Nijō mansion where she bears his child. This poem is her reply to one sent from Prince Niou when she was still living in the village of Uji: "We gaze upon the same cloudy sky—why then does the winter shower bring such uncertainty?" The heart of the poem is: when winter showers fall in the capital, hail falls in the mountain village, and both the sky I gaze upon in my melancholy morning and evening, and my heart, grow dark and desolate.
