桐壺（きりつぼ）の帝（みかど）の皇子（わうじ）源氏の御（おん）
弟（おとゝ）也 始（はじめ）はそちの宮（みや）といひしを
処子巻（をとめのまき）に兵部（へうぶ）卿と成（なり）紅（こう）
梅巻（ばいのまき）にかくれ賜（たま）ふ此哥（このうた）は玉

現代語訳
【右丁 上部】
桐壺帝の皇子で源氏の弟である。初めは朱雀宮と言ったが、乙女巻で兵部卿となり、紅梅巻で亡くなられる。この歌は玉鬘を恋して詠みかけられたもので、歌の心は、鳴き声も聞こえない蛍の思いでさえ、外から消そうとしても消えるものではない。まして人の恋い焦がれる思いは、どうしても止み難いものである、ということである。思いに火を添えている。

【左丁 上段】
父は左中弁、母は柏木右衛門督の乳母である。宇治宮に仕えて、総角の姫君が亡くなられた後、早蕨巻で尼になった。この歌はすなわち姫君が亡くなられたのを嘆いて詠んだものである。歌の心は、何事につけてもまず涙がこぼれて川となるほどであるが、その涙の川に身を投げたならば、姫君にも遅れずに死ぬことができたであろう、ということである。

【Right Page, Upper Section】
He is a son of Emperor Kiritsubo and the younger brother of Genji. Initially called Sochi no Miya, he became Hyōbukyō (Minister of War) in the Otome (Maidens) chapter and passed away in the Kōbai (Red Plum Blossoms) chapter. This poem was composed when he courted Tamakazura. The heart of the poem is: even the feelings of a firefly, whose voice cannot be heard, cannot be extinguished by outside forces trying to put it out. How much more difficult it is to stop a person's burning love! He adds fire to the metaphor of passionate feelings.

Her father is the Assistant Middle Controller, and her mother is the wet nurse of Kashiwagi, the Right Gate Guard Captain. She served at Uji Palace, and after Princess Agemaki passed away, she became a nun in the Sawarabi (Bracken Shoots) chapter. This poem was composed lamenting the death of the princess. The heart of the poem is: no matter what happens, tears flow first and become like a river. If I had thrown myself into that river of tears, I could have died without being left behind by the princess.
