異物同趣でその力がやや緩やかな者を仮用して、効を助け性を和らげて剤を調えるべきである。走竄芳香の品がすなわちこれである。蓋し芳香の性は、摩痒して精神を悦ばせ沈衰を発散させる。故に之をして害となるに至らしめず、使用の妙は必ずここにある。
刺撃走竄の諸薬は、多量急進すれば神経が薬気に耐えられないという弊害を招く。阿片のごときは奪知安神で、用法に両端を持つ。故によく諸薬をして衝撃なく痙を起こす害を避けることができ、急劇の際に奇勲を建てるのは、他薬の匹するところではない。
阿片を内服して試すに、諸般の疼痛痙攣を鎮めるのみならず、喘急咳嗽下利のようなものも、これを服すれば先ず病勢を穏やかにして眠りを催し、その人は暫くは必ず患苦を免れる。

One should temporarily employ substances of different nature but similar purpose whose power is somewhat milder, to assist the effect, moderate the nature, and harmonize the prescription. Penetrating aromatic substances are exactly this. Generally, the nature of aromatics is to stimulate and please the spirit while dispersing stagnation and decline. Therefore, they do not cause harm, and the subtlety of their use certainly lies in this.
Various medicines that are stimulating and penetrating, when administered in large quantities rapidly, invite the harm of the nervous system being unable to tolerate the medicinal qi. As for opium, it has the dual function of dulling consciousness and calming the spirit. Therefore, it can enable various medicines to avoid the harm of causing convulsions through violent impact, achieving extraordinary merit in urgent situations - something no other medicine can match.
When testing opium by internal administration, it not only calms various types of pain and spasms, but also conditions like dyspnea, cough, and diarrhea - when taken, it first calms the disease momentum and induces sleep, and the person temporarily must be freed from suffering.
According to my [Shaku's] analysis, this principle is achieved through its ability to dull consciousness. To explain this through analogy: whenever there is disease that attacks the nervous system, the nerves contract and struggle for balance with it, producing various abnormal symptoms, contracting and tensing in anger without rest, trying to determine victory or defeat at once. In cases of extreme agitation, even if the pathogenic poison does not particularly press and invade, one may already struggle alone and bring about self-destructive defeat.
