沖繩縣ノ學事ニ於ケルヤ。去ル十三年。學制ニ據
リ學區ヲ分チ。那覇ニ師範校。首里ニ中學校。各間
切各離島ニ小學校ヲ置キシヨリ。未タ數年ナラ
スシテ。普通敎育全管ニ洽ク。啓智發蒙ノ具備ハ
レリト謂ツヘシ。唯本縣地誌ニ至リテハ。小學ノ
用書ニ充チ。幼童ノ誦讀ニ給スヘキ善本ナシ。將
ニ其書ヲ編成セントスルニ際シ。嘗テ師範校ニ

沖縄県の学事については、去る十三年に学制に基づいて学区を分け、那覇に師範学校、首里に中学校、各間切各離島に小学校を設置してから、まだ数年しか経っていないが、普通教育が全県に広く行き渡り、知恵を啓き蒙を開く設備が備わったと言えるでしょう。ただ、本県の地誌については、小学校の教科書として用い、子どもたちの音読学習に適した良書がありません。その書物を編成しようとする際に、かつて師範学校において起草した原稿がありました。そこで修正委員を選び、

Regarding education in Okinawa Prefecture: In the 13th year of Meiji (1880), school districts were established according to the Education System Order, with a normal school in Naha, a middle school in Shuri, and elementary schools in each magiri (administrative district) and outlying islands. Although only a few years have passed since then, general education has spread widely throughout the prefecture, and facilities for enlightening wisdom and dispelling ignorance can be said to be well established. However, regarding the geography of this prefecture, there are no good textbooks suitable for elementary school use and for children's reading practice.
