うらしまかへし
わかれゆくうはのそらなるから衣
ちきりふかくはまたもきて見ん
さてうらしまたらうはたがひになごり
をおしみつゝかくて有へき事ならねは
かたみのはこをとりもちてふるさとへこそ
かへりけれわすれもやらぬこしかたゆくす
ゑの事ともおもひつゝけてはるかのなみ
ぢをかへるとてうらしまたらうかくなん
かりそめにちきりし人のおもかけを
わすれもやらぬ身をいかゞせん
さてうらしまはふるさとへかへり見てあれ
ばしんせきたえてとらふすのべとなり
にけりうらしまこれを見てこはいか
なる事やらんとおもひあるかたはらを
見れはしはのいほりのありけるにたち
よりものいはんといひけれはうちより
八十はかりのおきないてあひたれにてわ
たり候そと申せはうらしま申けるは此
ところにうらしまのゆくゑは候はぬか
といひけれはおきな申やういかなる人
にて候へばうらしまのゆくゑをは御た
現代語訳
浦島返し
別れゆく上の空なる唐衣
契り深くはまたも来て見ん
さて浦島太郎は互いに名残を惜しみつつ、このようにしていることはできないので、形見の箱を取り持って故郷へと帰りました。忘れることもできない過去から未来への出来事を思い続けて、はるかな波路を帰るとて、浦島太郎はこのように詠みました。
仮初めに契りし人の面影を
忘れもやらぬ身をいかがせん
さて浦島は故郷へ帰って見てみると、親戚は絶えて虎や狼の住む野となってしまいました。浦島はこれを見て「これはどのようなことであろうか」と思い、ある傍らを見ると、柴の庵がありましたので立ち寄り、物を言おうと言いましたところ、家の中より八十ばかりの翁が出て「どちらからいらっしゃいましたか」と申しますので、浦島が申しますには「この所に浦島の行方はございませんか」と言いましたところ、翁が申しますよう「どのような人でございますれば、浦島の行方をお尋ね

Urashima's Reply

If our bond is deep, I shall come to see you again
So Urashima Tarō, while both cherished their reluctance to part, knew this could not continue, so taking the keepsake box, he returned to his homeland. Continuing to think of the events from past to future that he could not forget, as he returned across the distant wave-path, Urashima Tarō composed this poem:
The visage of one with whom I made a fleeting vow—
What shall I do with this body that cannot forget?
When Urashima returned to his homeland and looked around, his relatives had all disappeared and it had become a field where tigers and wolves dwelt. Seeing this, Urashima thought "What manner of thing is this?" and looking to one side, he saw a hut of brushwood, so he approached and said he wished to speak. From within the house came an old man of about eighty years who said "Where have you come from?" Urashima replied, "Is there no trace of Urashima in this place?" The old man said, "What manner of person are you that you inquire about Urashima's whereabouts?"
