さてはかいらうとうけつのかたらひもあ
さからすてんにあらはひよくのとりち
にあらはれんりのえだとならんとたが
ひにえんわうのちきりあさからずし
てあかしくらさせたまふさて女はう
申けるはこれはりうぐうじやうとてた
のしみふかきところなり四ほうに四
きのさうもくをあらはせりみせ申さ
むとてひきぐしていでにけりまづ
ひがしおもてを見ければはるのけしきと
うち見えてむめやさくらのさきみだ
れやなきのいともはるかせになびきかす
みのうちよりもうくひすのねののきち
かくいづれのこすゑもはななれやみなみお
もてを見てあればなつのけしきとみえわ
たりはるをへだつるかきほにはうのはなや
まづさきぬらんいけのはちすはつゆかけ
てみぎはすゞしきさゞなみにみづとり
あまたあそびけり木ゞのこすゑもし
げりつゝそらになきぬるせみのこゑゆふ
だちすぐるくもまよりこゑたてとをる
ほとゝきすなきてなつをやしらせけん
現代語訳
さて契りを交わし、誓いも浅からず、天には比翼の鳥、地には連理の枝となろうと、互いに縁王の契り浅からずして明け暮らしなさった。さて女房が申すことには「ここは竜宮城といって楽しみの深いところです。四方に四季の草木を表しております。お見せ申そう」とて手を引いて外に出た。まず東の方を見れば春の景色と見えて、梅や桜の咲き乱れ、柳の糸も春風になびき、霞の中よりも鶯の音の軒近く、いずれの梢も花盛りや。南の方を見てあれば夏の景色と見えわたり、春を隔てる垣根には卯の花やまず咲いているらん。池の蓮は露をかけて水際涼しき小波に水鳥数多遊んでいた。木々の梢も茂りつつ空に鳴き抜ける蝉の声、夕立過ぐる雲間より声立て通る時鳥鳴いて夏をや知らせけん。

So they exchanged vows, and their pledge was not shallow—like the paired-wing birds in heaven and the intertwined branches on earth, they spent their days and nights together with their karmic bond deep and lasting. Then the woman said, "This is the Dragon Palace, a place of profound pleasure. The four seasons' vegetation is represented in the four directions. Let me show you," and she took his hand and went outside. First, when they looked to the east, it appeared to be a spring scene—plum and cherry blossoms bloomed in profusion, willow branches swayed in the spring breeze, and from within the mist came the song of bush warblers near the eaves, with every treetop in full bloom. When they looked to the south, it appeared to be a summer scene stretching out before them—deutzia flowers must be blooming continuously on the hedge that separates spring from summer. Lotus flowers in the pond were adorned with dew, and many waterfowl played in the cool ripples at the water's edge. The treetops of the trees grew thick, and the voices of cicadas rang through the sky, while from between the clouds of a passing evening shower came the voice of a cuckoo calling out—perhaps announcing summer.
