その間にかなりの金を掘り集めたが、これにも多くの善悪があるということをアメリカに帰って物語した。日を経てまたカリフォルニアに行きたいと嘘をつき、酉の年の頃にオアフ島に来て帰朝を申し合わせた。本当は中国へ行き商船に頼もうとしたが、日本へはまだ渡航したことがない国なので連れて行くことができないという。小舟一艘を求め、この舟に乗せ置き、日本に近い所からその舟に乗せて渡すだろうと言うので、舟一艘を求めて右の舟に入った。ところで万次郎はその舟の船長と寵愛されて養子の約束が済んでいたが、まだ神参り等はしていないので夫婦というわけではない。よってその人へも縁女へも書面をもって約束を断った。それから出帆して同年琉球沖でその小舟を下ろし、これに乗って琉球へ渡った。この時万次郎は一礼を述べ、また一通手紙をしたため、寅右衛門はこの時オアフ島に残っているので、その書面にこのたび首尾よく日本へ帰ることになったので、よい便り次第早々帰られるよう書き記め、大船へ頼んで送った。それから伝蔵、五右衛門、万次郎の三人は琉球国へ着船した。すると琉球人は大いに怪しんだので、早々日本の髪型にしようと三人とも髷を結った。これでようやく日本人だと分かってもらえた。しかし、その髪が以前のようでなければ薩摩藩へ渡すことができないと言われ、また髪を伸ばし、一年程経って薩摩に引き渡されることになった。それから厳重に受け取られて、また長崎へ送られることになった。長崎で万次郎所持の本類、天文の土産の心づもりで彼が掘った金、一寸四方の金二つ、これも共に長崎で御取り上げになり、御返しになったのは三人の衣類の外に一枚着たるものがあるということ。また三人とも長持ち一つずつ持って帰国した。さて、それから長崎より引き渡しの時、役人より受け取りの役人へ言われたのは、まずこのたびは引き渡しになったが、当地で召し抱えておいて重宝な者として、そのことを土佐藩へ届け出たということである。めでたし、めでたし。
