このようにしながら住吉では、中将殿が夜も昼も露ほども眠られず、この君に会い見えずばこの海の底の藻屑となって、今世の海人ともなってしまおうと思し召していらっしゃるうちに、幻とでも言うのでしょうか。ひどく年老いた翁で、髪の毛が白い者が中将を拝見して、うやうやしい様子で「いとおしいことです。君がお恋い慕っていらっしゃる人は、すでに冥途へと向かう道にお向かいになっているのです。されど言うとはいえ、恋ゆえに死んだ人を、この世によみがえらせようという御恩の憐れみを」
