（姫君の手を）引いてお入れ申し上げる。介が参って、涙の合間から「どうして中将殿がいらっしゃったのですか。たとえ最期のお別れの道であっても、しばらくお立ち止まりください」と声も詰まらせて叫んだけれども、六道輪廻の理から逃れることはできず、二度と咲くことのない花のように、三途の川の向こう西方に傾いて、再び中空に帰る習いもないので、雪のように白い御胸のあたりも冷え切って、一度微笑まれた百の恋しさがあったお目元も閉ざされて、息絶えたご様子は例えようもなかった。

(The young lady's hand) was pulled and brought inside. The Assistant Governor came forth and through his tears said, "Why has Lord Chūjō come here? Even if this be the final path of parting, please stop for a while," and though he cried out with a choked voice, there was no escape from the six realms of transmigration. Like a flower that would never bloom again, she inclined toward the west beyond the Sanzu River, and as there is no custom of returning again to the sky, even her snow-white breast had grown completely cold. Her eyes, which had once smiled with a hundred loves, were now closed, and her appearance in death was beyond description.
