いかにすけかなけかんすらんとそれ
のみ心にかくり心くるしさもやるかた
なしとの給ひてそてを御かほに
をしあてゝなみたにむせひ給へは
すけいかならんみちにもすてさせ
給ふなとてなきかなしむ事かきり
なしたゝみやこの人々のこひしさ
わか君のしのはしさうつれはかはる
世のならひとはおもへとも中将の御
事もさすかにこひしきそとよ

介はこのお様子をどうしようかと
嘆き悲しんでいた。お心もただ弱り
まさりなさるので、私が亡くなったら
どんなに介が嘆くだろうかと、それ
ばかり心にかかり、心苦しさもやり場
がないとおっしゃって、袖をお顔に
押し当てて涙にむせびなさると、
介は「どのような道にもお捨てなさる
な」と言って泣き悲しむことは限り
ない。ただ都の人々の恋しさ、
我が君の慕わしさ、移ろいかわる
世の習いとは思うけれども、中将の御
ことも、やはり恋しいのだよ。

The attendant (suke) was lamenting and grieving, wondering what could be done about her mistress's condition. As her heart grew ever weaker, the princess said that she was tormented by the thought of how much her attendant would grieve if she were to die, and that this was all that weighed on her mind, with her heartache having nowhere to go. She pressed her sleeves against her face and sobbed with tears. The attendant, weeping and grieving without limit, said "Do not abandon me on any path." The princess spoke of her longing for the people of the capital, her yearning for her lord, and though she thought this was the way of a world that shifts and changes, she said that she still missed the Middle Captain (Chūjō) as well.
