給ふ事かきりなし日かすのふる
まゝにいとゝおもひのかすそひて
御身もしたいによはりたまひて
なからへてあるへしともおほしねは
とて御ふみとりのあとのやうに
かきおき給へりすけにむかひて
もしふしきにも中将にあひたて
まつりなはこれをまいらせよとて
たひはさてもいかならんあとまても
心うかりつる事ともいかならん世
まてもわすれかたくこそおほゆれ
されはうき世にはかたときもなから
へたくはなけれともわか君のこひし

さにつゆのいのちもおしきなり
たとひむなしくなりぬともこの
おもひよみちのさはりとなりぬへし
くちおしくこそおほゆるれとて御ま
くらのしたはうくはかり御なみたそて
もせんかたなくそみえさせたまふ
いつよりもこよひは心ほそく人々
もこひしくかなしく思ふとてたかひ
にかたりあかし給ふすけ申けるは
さりとも中将殿はわすれさせ給ふ
へきさりともひめ君たちののたま
はぬ事はよもあらしさしも御心
さしふかくわたらせ給ひし物をと
現代語訳
【右丁】
なさることは限りがない。日数が経つ
につれて、いよいよ思いが重なって
お体も次第に弱りなさって、
長らえて生きているはずもないとお思いになって、
お手紙を取るような様子で
書き置きなさった。介に向かって
「もし不思議にも中将にお会い申し上げ
なさったなら、これを差し上げよ」と言って。
それにしてもどのような死後までも
心憂かった事々は、どのような世
まで忘れ難く思われることよ。
だから憂き世には片時も長らえ
たくはないけれども、我が君の恋し

さに、露のような命も惜しいのです。
たとえ亡くなったとしても、この
思いが冥途の障りとなるでしょう。
口惜しく思われる」と言って、お
枕の下は憂いばかり、お涙で袖も
どうしようもなくお見えになる。
いつよりも今夜は心細く、人々も
恋しく悲しく思うと言って、互い
に語り明かしなさる。介が申すには
「それでも中将殿はお忘れになる
はずがございません。それでも姫君たちがおっしゃら
ない事はまさかございますまい。あれほどお心
を深くお寄せになっていらした方なのに」と

What she does is endless. As the days pass,
her thoughts grow ever heavier and
her body gradually weakens,
thinking that she could not possibly live much longer.
Like one taking up a letter to write,
she penned her final words. Turning to her attendant,
she said, "If by some miracle you should meet
the Middle Captain, give this to him."
"Even so, all these
heart-rending matters will be
unforgettable until whatever world may come.
Therefore, though I do not wish to linger
even a moment in this sorrowful world, my longing for my lord

makes even this dewdrop life precious to me.
Even if I should die, this
longing will surely become an obstacle on the path to the afterlife.
How frustrating this seems," she said. Under her
pillow there was only sorrow, and her tear-soaked sleeves
appeared utterly helpless.
More than any other night, tonight feels lonely, and she thinks
longingly and sadly of the people she loves, and they
spend the night talking together. The attendant said:
"Even so, the Middle Captain could never
forget you. Surely the young princesses would not
fail to speak of you. He who showed such deep
affection toward you."
