古-者輶-軒￣ノ之-使。必紀＿二￣シ土-風＿一￣ヲ誌＿二￣ス物-
冝＿一￣ヲ。所＿三-以￣ナリ重＿二￣スル其￣ノ俗＿一￣ヲ也。况￣ヤ扵＿二￣テヲヤ萬-里￣ノ之
外。蠻-夷海-㠀￣ノ之中＿一￣ニ乎。編-修澄-齋
徐-館-丈￣ノ之使＿二￣スル琉-球＿一￣ニ也。以＿二￣テ文-章＿一￣ヲ華￣ニシ

古より軽車の使者は、必ずその土地の風俗を記録し、物事の適宜を記録した。これはその風習を重んじるためである。まして万里の外、蛮夷の海島の中においてはなおさらである。編修澄斎徐館丈の琉球への使節としての派遣は、文章をもって国を華やかにし、政事をもって邦を治め、かつ儀容は端正で威厳があり、言辞は機敏で巧妙であった。真に四方に使者として派遣するにふさわしく、君命を辱めない者と言うべきである。帰国して中山伝信録を作成し

Preface to the Record of Messages from Chuzan

Since ancient times, envoys in light carriages have invariably recorded the customs and manners of the lands they visit and documented what is appropriate to local conditions. This is done in order to respect those customs. How much more so when dealing with barbarian maritime islands ten thousand li away! The dispatch of Editor Chengzhai Xu Guanzhang as an envoy to the Ryukyu Kingdom was accomplished with literary refinement that brought glory to the nation and with governmental skills that administered the domain. Moreover, his ceremonial bearing was upright and dignified, and his speech was quick and skillful. He truly could be called one fit to serve as an envoy to the four quarters without bringing shame to his sovereign's command. Upon his return, he composed the Record of Messages from Chuzan
