桃太郎に従った猿助は、団子（黍でできた）のおかげでよく働き名を上げた。一方、蟹を騙した猿蔵は、一口食べて頬を焼き、飯のせいで身を滅ぼした。同じように、奥山の猿丸太夫も、その行いによって善にもなり悪にもなる。どうして慎まずにいられようか。されば、昔々の草双紙、猿の尻の赤本も、ねんねんと（念入りに・ゆっくりと）丁寧に（転念比）

Author's Preface
Saruskue, who followed Momotarō, gained fame through his good service, aided by the millet used for dumplings (dango). Meanwhile, Saruzō, who had deceived a crab, burned his cheek by eating a single morsel of food, and ultimately lost his life over a bowl of rice. In the same spirit, Sarumaru Dayū of the deep mountains, too, becomes good or evil depending on his conduct. How could one not be cautious? And so, the old-fashioned kusazoshi picture books — even the "red books" (akahon) about the red bottoms of monkeys — are read with care and tenderness, page by page...
