そして寒熱温涼の薬を与えるべきことである。当今の医者がよく言うことに「私は古方医者であるから後世の薬方は用いない」あるいは「東垣流であるから古方の薬は調合しない」と言う。
儒学においてこそ漢以上を古学とし以下を後とし、宋朝風の頑固な学者は老荘の書は講じないということがあるけれども、医道は病を治すことを主とする。今古という差別があるべきであろうか。
私は常に諸生に教えるのに「我が門で医術を行うには、貴い身分といえども恐れず、権門といえども媚びへつらわず、野夫や貧しい老婆といえども軽んじ侮らず、古人名医の説といえども考証して効験がなければ取らず、後世の草莽の言といえども治療法に益があればこれを取り用いる」と。
往年、門生で肥後藩の医官某が学業を終えて帰るのを送った序文の中に「医の治法は賢君が国を治め、良将が兵を用いるように、寛猛の政治や背水の陣のことを言った」。これらの語は古人も言い、能ある人の口によく上ることであるけれども、麻疹に温薬をその症状により用いて害のないことを言うついでに記すのである。

And one should give medicines according to cold-heat and warming-cooling principles. Contemporary physicians often say "I am a classical formula doctor, so I do not use later-generation prescriptions" or "I follow the Dongyuan school, so I do not compound classical formulas."
In Confucian studies, one may consider pre-Han as ancient learning and post-Han as later, and rigid scholars of the Song dynasty style may say they do not lecture on Laozi and Zhuangzi texts. However, medical practice has healing illness as its primary purpose. Should there be such distinctions between ancient and modern?
I constantly teach my students: "When practicing medical arts in our school, do not fear even those of noble status, do not flatter even the powerful, do not look down upon even peasants or poor old women, do not adopt even famous ancient physicians' theories without verification if they lack efficacy, and do adopt even later generations' humble opinions if they benefit treatment methods."
In past years, when seeing off a student who was a medical official from Higo domain returning after completing his studies, I wrote in a farewell preface that "medical treatment methods are like a wise ruler governing a nation or a good general commanding troops, involving lenient and strict governance and desperate battle formations." These words have been spoken by ancients and are frequently quoted by capable people, but I record this as an aside to my point that using warming medicines for measles according to symptoms causes no harm.
