支ヘシ且其味美ナリ普鈴暫時ニ返リ忽牆ヲ登リ来
ルコト猫ノ如シ急ニ我ヲ呼ビ危難ノ至ルヲ告曰嶋近
ク五六舸ノ来ルヲル我急ニ詳ニ窺フニ五六ニ非ス
唯二三ナリ我曰恐ルヽコト勿レ悉ク彼ヲ殺サン兇人
ナレハ必我ヲ食ハン我彼ヲ殺スニ如カス汝能戦ン

漂流記事巻之三
乾季の時期が到来して天気が晴れて空気が澄んでいる。初めて出帆の準備をする。
種々の必要な道具を船の中に運び入れること二、三日。また溝を長く掘って
水を引き、船を浮かびやすくする。○ある朝、普鈴に
浜へ行って亀を捕らえさせる。これは一匹の亀の肉で七日分の食料を
まかなえるし、その上味が美味である。普鈴がしばらくして帰ってきて、たちまち塀を猫のように
登ってきた。急に私を呼んで危険が迫っていることを告げて言った。「島の近くに
五、六隻の船が来ているのを見た」と。私は急いで詳しく窺ってみると、五、六隻ではなく
ただ二、三隻であった。私は言った。「恐れることはない。すべて彼らを殺そう。悪人で
あれば必ず我々を食べるだろう。我々が彼らを殺すに限る。お前は戦えるか」

Records of Drifting at Sea, Volume Three
The dry season has arrived and the weather is clear with bright, crisp air. For the first time, we make preparations for setting sail.
We spend two or three days carrying various necessary implements into the boat. We also dig a long ditch to
draw water and make it easier for the boat to float. ○ One morning, I have Furin
go to the beach to catch a turtle. The meat of one turtle can
sustain us for seven days of meals, and moreover it tastes delicious. Furin returns after a short while and suddenly
climbs over the wall like a cat. He urgently calls me and announces that danger is approaching, saying, "I saw
five or six boats coming near the island." I quickly look carefully and see that it is not five or six boats but
only two or three. I said, "Do not fear. We shall kill them all. If they are
evil men, they will surely eat us. It is better that we kill them. Can you fight?"
