従わせる。彼はこれをさらに奇術だと思った。しかしながら間もなくその方法を習得した。○また、ただ羅針盤を見て驚嘆した。これはこの地方には本来磁石がなく、ただ雨季以外は大抵晴朗であるので、昼は地形を、夜は星を使って方角を見分けるからである。○第二十七年の秋、雨季に至った。そこで城（砦）に留まる。○二、三年前からフライデーを得て、私の労働は大いに軽減された。共に田を開墾し、また大量の葡萄を干して得た。○フライデーは小さな溝を掘って海水を引き、船を繋いだ。しかし船底は陸にあって湿らないようにした。またその上に樹枝で屋根を作り、雨を防いで十一月、十二月頃に至り、出航しようとその時期を待つ。
