## 【地震・火災の厄払い】
あぁ、なんと大きいことよ、大きいことよ。今晩今宵の天災を、神の力で払いましょう。
十月二日、三ヶ月、町並みのお門を眺めれば、三国一夜のうちに、土蔵や壁が（崩れ落ちる）不事（ふじ：不吉な出来事）の山。かかるうき目に、相生の松丸太やら杉丸太、飾り立てたる諸道具をお庭の外へ持ち運び、野宿する身の苦は病ひ。五十七日が（雨のように）降りかかる瓦や石が目にしみて、涙に湿る。
焼け原の昼夜、寝ずばん（寝ずの番）、自身番（地震番・自身番）、火の用心、身の用心。春ならねども皆人の「万歳楽」と唄い初め、数えた柱も折れ、口のめでたくなる人の山――これも世直し。
出雲から立ち帰りたる神々の踏み固めたる葦原皇国（あしはらのみくに）、千代に八千代に、要石の磐（いわほ）となりて苔の生すゆるがぬ御代を――はばかることなく、またもや隙を嗅ぎつけて、ぬらくら物の鯰めが驚いて尾鰭を動かさば、鹿島の神の名代（みょうだい）に、この事触れが抑えつけ、高天が原をうちとして、みもすそ川へさらりさらり。

焼ける土蔵等、残る所なし。ただし、三丁目・森田勘弥宅より北方、聖天横丁東へ（一帯は）残る。
また一方、聖天横丁北側、遍照院並びに裏店、ことごとく焼ける。同所、藪の内、新規新道通り、数百軒焼ける。同、東方六軒町、九品寺、山の宿町、みな焼ける。ただし、東側は残り。それより南方、花川戸町、戸沢長屋数百軒、花川戸三丁、大川端、吾妻橋際まで焼ける。

## [Ritual Purification Chant Against Earthquake and Fire Disaster]
Ahh, what a tremendous thing, what a tremendous thing! The heavenly disaster of this very night — let us drive it away with the power of the gods!
On the second day of the tenth month, gazing at the gateways of the town row after row for three months, within a single night worthy of the three realms, a mountain of calamity has fallen upon earthen storehouses and walls alike. Caught in such misery, pine logs and cedar logs for construction, along with all manner of furnishings and decorations, are hauled out to the garden and beyond, and the suffering of those sleeping out of doors is like an illness. For fifty-seven days, tiles and stones have rained down like rain, stinging the eyes, dampening them with tears.
Day and night on the burned-out fields — sleepless vigils, earthquake watch posts, fire precautions, precautions for one's own safety. Though it is not spring, everyone begins to sing "Manzai-raku" [a song of felicitous celebration], and though the counted pillars have snapped, there is a mountain of people whose mouths have turned auspicious [i.e., survivors offering thanks] — this too is the world setting itself right.
The gods, having returned from Izumo [after the tenth month assembly], have trodden firm this Reed-Plain Imperial Land [Japan]. For a thousand, nay eight thousand generations, may it become as the immovable foundation stone, covered in moss, an age that shall not be shaken — and yet, shamelessly, sensing another gap, should that slimy, wriggling catfish be startled and begin to thrash its tail and fins again, then as the deputy of the god of Kashima, this very proclamation shall press it down, making the High Plain of Heaven its ground, and sweep it away, away, into the River Mimosuso.

## [Record of Fire Damage in the Asakusa Area]
Earthen storehouses that burned — none left standing. However, the area from the residence of Morita Kanya [the kabuki theater proprietor] in Sanchōme northward, east of Shōten Yokochō, survived.
In another area, the north side of Shōten Yokochō, including Henshōin temple and the tenement houses behind, burned entirely. The same ward — the area within the bamboo grove, along Shinki Shindō (the newly built road) — several hundred houses burned. To the east, Rokkenmachi, Kuhon-ji Temple, Yamanoyadomachi — all burned. However, the eastern side survived. From there southward, Hanakawado-machi, the Tozawa tenement buildings of several hundred units, Hanakawado Sanchō, the riverbank of the Ōkawa (Sumida River), all the way to the approach of Azuma Bridge — burned.

A charitable shelter (osukuigoya) was established at Hiroko-ji in front of Sensōji Temple. The names of those who made charitable distributions are as follows:
