ここにまた、地震後まだ市中が落ち着かないうちに、諸方からさまざまな一枚摺りの錦絵や小冊子など、およそその数三百二十余りに及んだ。絵草紙屋、または辻々で売るものもあり、皆こぞってこれを求めた。しばらくして、お上より御制禁の品となったゆえ、残らず絶版とさせられた。しかしながら、大江戸の賑わいは広大なれば、絶版の後もまた余っているものがさまざまあり、その一つ二つを参考までに末尾に載せるのは、後の世に伝えて、（憂鬱な）雨中の慰みに添えるためである。

#### 気ばかりながら、力強い口上を申し上げます
一、そもそもこの「妙ゆり出し」崩れの儀は、先年信州にて揺り広め候ところ、大揺れ・大難渋仕り候間、決して他国へせり揺り・押し揺り一切いたさず候ところ、近年諸国に紛らわしい偽崩れが見受けられ申し候。とりわけ京・大坂・東海道筋を押し揺りいたし、また江戸表までも偽崩れを押し揺り仕り、その上、火事の起きることは極めて暗澹たることにつき、急ぎゆり止めを申し付け、私方一方ゆりに仕り候。もっとも、うんとはゆり申さず、当十月限りにゆり子へ申し渡し候間、逃げ出し野宿のお騒ぎなく、ご安心なされ、楽々とご夫婦仲よく、夜中のゆり出しはご自身にて毎夜二、三服ずつお用いになれば、ご子孫繁昌いたし、のらくらのお子供衆はいらっしゃいませぬ間、しっかりお抱きつきなされ、「ああ、もう、いっそいい世の中だ」とご評判くださり、お求めのほどお願い申し上げます。

## Appendix
Furthermore, while the city had not yet settled down after the earthquake, various single-sheet nishiki-e prints and small booklets of all kinds appeared from numerous sources, totaling more than three hundred and twenty items. Some were sold at picture-book shops, others by street vendors, and people flocked to buy them eagerly. Before long, however, the authorities declared them prohibited items, and all were ordered out of print. Nevertheless, given the vast and bustling nature of great Edo, various copies remained even after the ban, and we include one or two of them here as a reference, to pass down to future generations and offer some amusement on a gloomy, rainy day.

#### A most spirited sales pitch, humbly presented:
One: The origin of this "Miraculous Shaking Remedy" (*Myō Yuri-dashi*) — this crumbling formula — was first propagated in Shinshū Province in years past, whereupon it caused such great shaking and great hardship that we firmly resolved never to push or spread it to other provinces. However, in recent years, confusingly similar counterfeit crumblings have appeared throughout the land. In particular, unauthorized shakings were pushed through Kyoto, Osaka, and along the Tōkaidō highway, and even counterfeit crumblings were pushed all the way to Edo. On top of this, as the matter of fires breaking out was exceedingly dark and grim, we have promptly issued a stop to the shaking and have restricted operations to our establishment alone. That said, we shall not shake too violently, and we have instructed our "shaking agents" that operations will be limited through the end of this tenth month. So please be at ease — no need to flee in panic or sleep outdoors — and rest comfortably. If husband and wife get along well together and administer the nighttime shaking dose of two or three servings each night on your own, your descendants shall flourish and you shall be spared idle, shiftless children. So hold on tight, declare "Ah, what a wonderful world this is after all!" and we humbly beg you to purchase our product.
