和田（わだ）胤長（たねなが）頼家（よりいへ）の命によりて伊東が崎（さき）の洞（ほら）に入る事 東鏡（あづまかゞみ）に見へたり

村の中に寺ありその側（かたはら）に温泉（おんせん）あり寺の池に魚ありその形（かたち）鯉に似（に）たれども

そもそも熱海と称することについて、上古この地の海浜に温泉があって沸騰した湯が波を焼くため、熱海と名付けた。三面は山に囲まれて南の方は大海に面している。東都に通う船でこの沖を通らないものはない。熱海と同郷の村が二つあり、和田村・蓑口村という。
京山が熱海へ逗留している間に、宿の主人が熱海のことを記した一冊子を示してくれた。以下の説明はしばしばその書に従っている。

The reason it is called Atami (Hot Ocean) is that in ancient times there were hot springs on the seashore of this place, and the boiling water heated the waves, hence it was named Atami. Three sides are surrounded by mountains, and the south faces the vast ocean. Every ship traveling to the Eastern Capital passes through these waters. There are two villages in the same district as Atami: Wada Village and Minokuchi Village.
While Kyōzan was staying in Atami, the innkeeper showed him a booklet recording information about Atami. The following explanations often follow that book.
