薬師如来のつげならんと斎戒（さいかい）沐浴（もくよく）し海岸（かいがん）の洞（ほら）に入り断食（だんしき）して祈（いの）る
事三七日満願（まんぐわん）の夜後（うしろ）の山〳〵 鳴動（めいどう）し海上の波涛（はたう）さかまきてその音百千
の雷（いかづち）のことくしばらくして海中山上おだやかになりければ上人 岩窟（いわや）を出でゝあ
たりを見給ふに後（うしろ）なる山の麓（ふもと）に雲のごとくたちのぼるものあり上人 怪（あや）しみつゝ其所
にいたりて見玉ふに山 崩（くずれ）て石をあらはし石の間（あいだ）より熱湯（ねつとう）湧（わき）いづるありさま神龍（しんりやう）
口をひらきて水を吐（はく）がごとしさては我が念力（ねんりき）の満願（まんぐわん）して海中の温泉こゝに移（うつ）りし
ならんと上人此所にとゞまりて薬師如来を祈念（きねん）し此温泉に功能（こうのふ）あらしめて万
民の病苦（びやうく）を助け給へといのる事一七日にして立 去（さ）り玉ひぬ今にいたりてあたみの里人（さとひと）
の大湯（おほゆ）と唱（となへ）るは是なり天平宝字より今文政十三年にいたりて凡千百余
年？の昔より一日も湯の湧（わき）の絶（たゆ）る事なきは実（まこと）に神変（しんへん）不可思義（ふかしぎ）の霊泉（れいせん）也

現代語訳
薬師如来のお告げであろうと、斎戒沐浴して海岸の洞窟に入り、断食して祈ること21日、満願の夜に後ろの山々が鳴動し、海上の波涛が逆巻いて、その音は百千の雷のようであった。しばらくして海中も山上も穏やかになったので、上人は岩窟から出てあたりを見ると、後ろの山の麓に雲のように立ち上るものがあった。上人が怪しみながらその所に行って見ると、山が崩れて石を現し、石の間から熱湯が湧き出る様子は、神龍が口を開いて水を吐くようであった。これは我が念力が満願して海中の温泉がここに移ったのであろうと、上人はこの所に留まって薬師如来を祈念し、この温泉に効能を与えて万民の病苦を助け給えと祈ること7日で立ち去った。今に至って熱海の里人が「大湯」と唱えるのはこれである。天平宝字より今文政13年に至って、およそ千百余年の昔から一日も湯の湧出が絶えることがないのは、実に神変不可思議の霊泉である。

○温泉の効用
熱海の温泉は関東第一の名湯であるが、半ば遊山の地とのみ聞いて、その効能を詳しく知らない人が多いので、その効験をここに記す。▲中風で手足がしびれて歩行が思うようにいかないのに効果的である。▲眼病、かすみ目、ただれ目の類は7日入湯して目を洗えば治ることが素晴らしい。▲腰痛 ▲脚気 ▲筋肉の攣り ▲打撲 ▲挫き ▲諸々の虫 ▲寸白 ▲痔 ▲脱肛 ▲淋病《小児に良い》▲喘息 ▲婦人の腰の冷え ▲懐妊しない人 ▲気虚 ▲血損 ▲歯痛《歯がゆるむ場合はこの湯を含めば効果的》▲腫物 ▲刀傷。この湯に入れば初めはその毒を出し、その後完全に癒えることが素晴らしい。右のいずれも医療を尽くして効果のないものに効果的である。ただし水腫、腹満、癩病はこの湯を禁ずべきである。湯に入る間に房事を慎まなければ効き目が遅いであろう。
ついでに言うと、文政13年7月上旬、百樹（著者）がこの地に至り、渡部氏の客舎に宿って温泉に浴した折、主人の婦人の話によると、今年春の半ば、主人は江戸に

Believing this to be a revelation from Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha), the monk practiced purification rituals and entered a cave on the seashore, fasting and praying for twenty-one days. On the night of the fulfillment of his vow, the mountains behind rumbled, the waves on the sea surged violently, and the sound was like that of hundreds and thousands of thunderclaps. After a while, both the sea and mountains became calm, so the monk emerged from the cave and looked around. He saw something rising like clouds from the foot of the mountain behind. The monk, finding this strange, went to that place and saw that the mountain had collapsed, exposing rocks, and hot water was gushing forth from between the rocks like a divine dragon opening its mouth to spout water. Thinking that his spiritual power had been fulfilled and the hot spring from the sea had moved here, the monk remained at this place, prayed to Yakushi Nyorai for seven days asking that this hot spring be given healing powers to help relieve the suffering of all people, and then departed. What the people of Atami call "Oyu" (Great Hot Spring) to this day is this very spring. From the Tenpyo-hoji era until now, Bunsei 13 (1830), for over eleven hundred years, the spring has never ceased flowing for even a single day - truly a miraculous and mysterious sacred spring.

○Therapeutic Effects of the Hot Spring
Though Atami's hot spring is the finest medicinal bath in the Kanto region, many people think of it merely as a place for pleasure trips and do not know its healing properties in detail, so I record its therapeutic effects here. ▲Excellent for stroke patients whose limbs are numb and cannot walk as they wish. ▲For eye diseases, blurred vision, and inflamed eyes - bathing for seven days and washing the eyes produces wonderful cures. ▲Lower back pain ▲Beriberi ▲Muscle cramps ▲Bruises ▲Sprains ▲Various parasites ▲Tapeworms ▲Hemorrhoids ▲Rectal prolapse ▲Gonorrhea《good for children》▲Asthma ▲Women's cold lower back ▲Women who cannot conceive ▲Qi deficiency ▲Blood loss ▲Toothache《for loose teeth, holding this water in the mouth is effective》▲Tumors ▲Sword wounds. When entering this bath, it first expels the toxins and then achieves complete healing wonderfully. All of the above are effective when medical treatment has been exhausted without results. However, those with edema, abdominal distension, and leprosy should avoid this bath. If one does not abstain from sexual activity while taking the baths, the effects will be slow.
Incidentally, in early July of Bunsei 13 (1830), Momoki (the author) came to this place and stayed at the Watanabe family's guesthouse to bathe in the hot spring. At that time, the hostess told him that in the middle of this spring, her husband went to Edo...
