に就きたるに。実之吉は今一度家具を運び出さむものと。単身
烟（けむり）を潜（くゞ）りて。屋内に踏入りたるこそ運の極みなれ。忽ち眩暈
して。其の場に倒れ焼け崩（くづ）れたる襖障子（ふすましやうじ）の下となりて。大火傷（おほやけど）
をなしながらも夢中に表（おもて）へ匍（は）ひ出でたる処を。折よく巡査に認
められ。戸部分署（とべぶんしよ）に運（はこ）ばれしが。全身（ぜんしん）に完膚（くわんふ）なく耳も鼻も現形
を存せず。宛然天刑病者（さながらてんけいべうしや）の如く。腐爛（ふらん）したれば。更（さら）に戸板（といた）に乗
せて野毛山なる十全病院に送りて。副院長渋川氏を首（はじ）め助手七
人に治療（ぢれう）を受けしめたる後（のち）。医員（いゐん）の問に宿所姓名を答へ。且つ
地蔵坂（ぢざうさか）に親戚小林なるものゝ在る由を告げたれば。戸部分署よ
り人を派して小林某を呼迎へ。実之吉の女房ヒデ（二十八）に通（し）
知（ら）せられたるに。十三日午前二時三十分頃ヒデは同病院に来り。
此始末に夫が病床（びやうしやう）の傍らに泣倒（なきたほ）れたるよし。斯くて実之吉は医
薬の効なく同五時終に死亡したり。

限興行を終りて。火災の際は休業し居たるにぞ。近火と聞くよ
り。隣家（りんか）吉田町一丁目一番地に住する座主斎藤調三郎 （六十三）
雇人樋口伊三郎 （十九）、姓不詳安太郎 （十九）、茶番姓不詳敬次郎
（二十七）、楽屋番田辺熊吉 （四十三）、同人妻みね （三十七）出方頭
竹内清次郎 （五十四）の七名。座附の道具（だうぐ）など取片付の為め。同
座に駈付（かけつ）け。余念（よねん）なく働き居る内。向ひなる勧業場日の出館の
三階焼落ちて猛火（もうくわ）は。早くも四隣に廻（まわ）りて逃げ道を杜絶（とぜつ）したれ ば。何れも無惨の最後（さいご）を遂げたり。斯と知らずや。翌朝に至り
座主も雇人の姿も一向に見へざるを訝（いぶか）りつゝ。人々残灰 取除（とりのぞ）き

（広瀬実之吉は）火が自分の方へ迫ってくるのを見て、家人を督促して家具の搬出に努め、ほぼその半分を取り出したところで、すでに火が家の四方を取り囲んでいたため、もはやこれまでと諦めて、家の者は皆それぞれの避難場所へ向かった。ところが実之吉は、もう一度家具を運び出そうと、一人で煙の中をくぐり抜けて屋内に踏み込んだのが命取りとなった。たちまち目眩を起こしてその場に倒れ、焼け崩れた襖や障子の下敷きとなりながら、大火傷を負いつつも夢中になって表へ這い出たところを、折よく巡査に発見され、戸部分署へ運ばれた。しかし全身に傷一つない皮膚の部分もなく、耳も鼻もその形を留めず、まるで天刑病（ハンセン病）患者のように爛れていたため、さらに戸板に乗せて野毛山の十全病院へ送り、副院長渋川氏をはじめ助手七人による治療を受けた後、医員の問いに対して住所と氏名を答え、また地蔵坂に小林という親戚がいることを告げた。そこで戸部分署から人を遣わして小林某を呼び迎え、実之吉の妻ヒデ（二十八歳）に知らせたところ、十三日午前二時三十分頃、ヒデは同病院に駆けつけ、夫の病床の傍らに泣き崩れたという。こうして実之吉は医薬の甲斐もなく、同日午前五時についに死亡した。

蔦座では、先頃から活動写真（映画）を上映していたが、予定の期間の興行を終えて、火災の際は休業していた。近くで火事と聞くや、隣家・吉田町一丁目一番地に住む座主・斎藤調三郎（六十三歳）、雇人・樋口伊三郎（十九歳）、姓不詳・安太郎（十九歳）、茶番・姓不詳・敬次郎（二十七歳）、楽屋番・田辺熊吉（四十三歳）、その妻・みね（三十七歳）、出方頭・竹内清次郎（五十四歳）の七名が、劇場附属の道具などを取り片付けるために同座へ駆けつけ、懸命に働いていたところ、向かいにあった勧業場・日の出館の三階が焼け落ち、猛火はたちまち四方に回って逃げ道を塞いでしまったため、七名は皆無惨な最期を遂げた。このことを知らずに翌朝を迎え、座主も雇人の姿も全く見えないことを不審に思いながら、人々が残灰を取り除いていくと——

●Burned Alive to a Charred Ruin (continued from previous page)
(Hirose Saneyoshi) saw the fire advancing toward him and urged his household to work at removing the furniture, managing to get roughly half of it out. However, by this point the fire had already surrounded the house on all sides, and accepting that there was no more to be done, the household members each made their way to their respective places of refuge. Saneyoshi, however, resolved to make one more trip to retrieve furniture, and plunged alone into the smoke and entered the building — a decision that would prove fatal. He immediately became dizzy and collapsed on the spot, falling beneath the burning and crumbling sliding doors and partitions. Though badly burned, he somehow crawled desperately to the front entrance, where he was fortunately spotted by a police officer and carried to the Tobe sub-station. His entire body was without a single patch of unburned skin; his ears and nose had lost their recognizable form, and he was festering like a sufferer of "tenkeibyo" (leprosy). He was then placed on a wooden stretcher-board and transported to the Jūzen Hospital on Nogeyama, where he received treatment from the deputy director, Dr. Shibukawa, and seven assistants. After treatment, he responded to the medical staff's questions by giving his address and name, and informed them that he had a relative named Kobayashi on Jizō Hill. The Tobe sub-station dispatched someone to summon this Kobayashi, and Saneyoshi's wife Hide (age 28) was duly notified. At around 2:30 a.m. on the 13th, Hide arrived at the hospital and collapsed weeping beside her husband's sickbed. Despite all medical efforts, Saneyoshi passed away at 5:00 a.m. the same morning.

●The Tragic Fate of the Tsuta-za Theater （See illustration）
The Tsuta-za had recently been presenting moving picture shows (motion pictures), but had concluded its scheduled run and was closed at the time of the fire. Upon hearing that a fire had broken out nearby, the theater owner Saitō Chōsaburō (age 63), who lived next door at 1-chōme, No. 1, Yoshida-chō, along with hired hand Higuchi Isaburō (age 19), a man of unknown surname named Yasutarō (age 19), a tea-server of unknown surname named Keijirō (age 27), dressing room attendant Tanabe Kumakichi (age 43), his wife Mine (age 37), and the head usher Takeuchi Seijirō (age 54) — seven people in total — rushed to the theater to retrieve and secure the theater's props and equipment. While they were absorbed in their work, the third floor of the facing exhibition hall, the Hinode-kan, burned and collapsed, and the raging flames quickly spread in all directions, cutting off their escape routes. All seven met a pitiful end. Not knowing what had happened, by the following morning people grew suspicious at seeing neither the theater owner nor the hired workers anywhere, and began removing the remaining ashes —
