玉都豊島郡におゐては屋宅の棟に土を置其上に色々の

卯月中旬、荒川を越えて足立郡に入り、民家の様子を見たところ、
上方や中国地方の風土よりもさらに貧しく見える。
百姓で一家を構えているところもなく、宿泊した名主の家では、座敷に額などを掛け、
あるいは書箱やあるいは碁盤・卓を飾り、なかなか風雅な体裁である。荏原郡・
玉川・豊島郡においては、屋敷の棟に土を置き、その上に色々の
草を植えて、風に吹き飛ばされないように包んである。また竈のある
家は稀で、炉で生活している。これが当国の在郷の風俗と思っていたが、

Record of Adachi District

In mid-April, I crossed the Arakawa River and entered Adachi District. Observing the condition of the people's houses,
they appeared even poorer than the landscapes of the Kamigata region or the Chūgoku provinces.
There were no farmers who maintained proper households. At the village headman's house where I stayed, the sitting room had hanging scrolls and such,
or book boxes, or go boards and tables were displayed—quite an elegant appearance. In Ebara District,
Tamagawa, and Toshima District, they place soil on the roof ridges and
plant various grasses on top, wrapping them so they won't be blown away by the wind. Also, houses with kamado (cooking stoves)
are rare, and people live using irori (sunken hearths). I had thought this was the custom of the rural areas of this province, but
upon entering Adachi District, they raise soil on the ridges, yet there are no households maintaining proper houses, the roofs...
