の権守のむすめ《割書：伊賀権守橘成忠女｜中宮小辨》にてこそ
あ￣ンめれ。それならは。すかたもさるものなれ
と。心こそこよなうまされる人よといふ
にそ。なをしちかく居よりて。せめては聲
きくはかりのちきりを。ねかはまほしくて
聞てこそおとろかれぬる雪の内も
待へかりけるうくひすのこゑ
あはれとはきゝたまはぬにやといへは。さ

すかに見すくしかたくやありけん。いさ一言
はつたへまいらせても見はやといふ。うれし
さにうちいてん言の葉もなし
しらせはや木葉かくれのむもれ水
下になかれてたえぬこゝろを
なといふめれ。あるたそかれの比
内の宿直（トノヰ）よりまかてなんとしけるに
萩の戸の庭のかたに。あやしけなる鳥あ

……の権守の娘（伊賀権守橘成忠の娘、中宮小弁）でございましょう。それならば、容姿もさることながら、心こそがこの上なく優れた人ですよ」と言うので、なおいっそう（思いが）近く（胸に）迫ってきて、せめてその声を聞くだけのご縁を願いたくて（次の歌を詠んだ）——
聞いてこそ驚かれぬる雪の内も
待てばかりけるうぐいすの声
（「雪の中でも、聞けばはっと心を打たれる——待ち望んでいたうぐいすの声のように」）
「（この思いを）哀れとは聞いてくださらないでしょうか」と言うと、

さすがに（その気持ちを）見過ごしにしがたかったのでしょう、「では、一言だけでも伝えてさしあげてみましょうか」と言う。その嬉しさに、言葉として打ち明けようにも言葉も出てこない。
知らせばや木の葉隠れの埋もれ水
下に流れて絶えぬ心を
（「知ってほしいものだ——木の葉に隠れた埋もれ水のように、表には見えずとも、ひそかに絶えることなく流れ続けるこの心を」）
などと詠んだようである。ある夕暮れ時、（兼好が）宮中の宿直から退出しようとしていたところ、萩の戸の庭の方に、見慣れぬ鳥が……

"...the daughter of the Governor of Iga" (the daughter of Tachibana no Naritada, Governor of Iga; known at court as Chūgū no Shōben). "If that is indeed who she is, then her appearance is fine enough, but it is her heart that surpasses all others." Hearing this, his longing drew all the closer within him, and wishing at least for the bond of hearing her voice, he composed the following poem:
*Kiite koso odorokarenuru yuki no uchi mo*
*Mateba karikeru uguisu no koe*
("Even amid the snow, once heard, how it startles the heart — like the voice of the warbler, for which one has so long been waiting.")
"Will you not let her hear of this, and take pity?" he asked. At this,

the companion apparently found it impossible to simply let the matter pass. "Very well, let me at least convey a word on your behalf," he said. So overjoyed was he that no words came to express what he wished to say. He composed:
*Shirasebaya konohagakure no umoremizu*
*Shita ni nagarete taenu kokoro wo*
("I wish she could know — like water buried beneath fallen leaves, flowing unseen beneath the surface, this heart of mine that flows on, never ceasing.")
So he seemed to have composed. Then, one evening at dusk, as he was departing from his night duty at the imperial palace, in the direction of the garden by the萩 (bush clover) door, a strange-looking bird...
