【右丁】
りて。翅を羽ふりて口はしをいからかし飛
さかる。人みなをそれてにけまとふ。すてに
御殿にかけり入なんとしけれは。兼好
村滋藤の弓に。やなくゐの矢をとり射け
るに。あやまたすしてあたる。今ひとつの
鳥。つるの音におとろくけしきにて。とひ
かへらんとするを。またこれをも射とめて
けり。みな人立よりて。これを見たりけれは。

一は鴨のやうにて。足にくろき毛生たり。今
ひとつはかたち鳫のことくにて。其色きはめてあ
かし。やかて文の博士。くすりの博士をめして。此
鳥の名をたつね下されけれと。誰も〳〵。あへて
それかと 勅荅申上るものなしたゝいふせき
すかたにて。あやしきものとのみ思ひて。ま
ほりゐたるに。しはしありて此鳥。ふたつな
からきつにとなりてうせにき。

（不思議な鳥が）いて、翅（はね）をばたばたと羽ばたかせ、くちばしを逆立てるようにして飛びかかってくる。人々はみな恐れて逃げ惑った。今にも御殿の中へ飛び込もうとしたので、兼好は村滋藤（むらしげとう）の弓に矢拭（やぬぐい）の矢を取って射たところ、過たず（あやまたず）命中した。もう一羽の鳥は、（矢の放つ）弦の音に驚いた様子で、飛び返ろうとするところを、これもまた射止めてしまった。人々が皆近寄って、この鳥を見たところ、

一羽は鴨のような形をしていて、足に黒い毛が生えていた。もう一羽は形が雁（がん）のようで、その色が極めて赤かった。やがて文章博士（もんじょうはかせ）・薬（くすり）の博士をお召しになって、この鳥の名を尋ねさせられたけれども、誰も誰も、あえて「これこれのものです」と勅答を申し上げる者がなく、ただ押し黙った様子で、「怪しいものだ」とだけ思って、（鳥を）見守っていたところ、しばらくして、この鳥は、二羽ともに狐となって消えてしまった。

Just as the bird was about to burst into the palace hall, Kenkō took a bowstring of *Murashigetō* and fitted an arrow to it, and shot — striking true without fail. The second bird, startled by the sound of the bowstring, made to turn and flee, but this one too he brought down with a shot. All the people came forward and gathered around to look at the birds.

One resembled a duck in form, but its feet were covered with black fur. The other was shaped like a wild goose, yet its color was an extreme, vivid red. Presently, the Doctor of Letters (*Monjō Hakase*) and the Doctor of Medicine (*Kusuri no Hakase*) were summoned, and they were asked to identify the names of these birds. Yet not a single one among them dared to come forward and offer an answer to the imperial inquiry; they simply stood in brooding silence, thinking only that the creatures were deeply strange, and watched over them. After a short while, both birds transformed into foxes and vanished.
