院これを感し覚し召て。かねよしに禄
かつけさせ給ふ。そのほとはみやこも。ひなに

【右丁】
院（いん）はこれを感じ思し召して、兼好（かねよし）に禄（ろく）をお授けになった。その頃は、都においても、鄙（ひな）においても、これこそ珍しい出来事として語り伝えられたようだ。さて、かつて約束してくれた人の方から、「来てくれるのだろうか」と、待ちわびる日々が積もり重なって、その人のことさえも懐かしく思われるほどの時が経ってしまったので、
かくしつつ いつをか限りと 知らま弓
起き伏し過ごす 月日なるらむ
（このように（あなたを）待ちわびながら、いつを限りと知ることができようか——弓のように、起きても臥しても過ごす月日であることよ。）

と恨み言を言ったけれども、（相手は）賢ぶって、ひとえに薄情なので、頼みにしていた人もどうしようもない。夏の夕暮れ時のことであっただろうか、
飛ぶ蛍 またつけ来（こ）さぬ 雲居より
行き交ふ秋と 風やふくらむ
（飛ぶ蛍よ、まだ届かずにいる雲の上のあの方のもとから、往き来する秋風というものが吹いているのだろうか。）
なおも思いを晴らすすべがないので、祈っても神さえもお聞き届けにならないかと、

The Retired Emperor was deeply moved and impressed by this, and bestowed a reward (*roku*) upon Kaneyoshi. At that time, both in the capital and in the provinces, this was spoken of as a truly remarkable occurrence. Now, from the direction of that person who had made a certain promise, day after day piled upon day as he waited, wondering "will she come?", until so much time had passed that even the thought of that person had become a source of longing and nostalgia, and so he lamented:
*Kaku shitsutsu / itsu wo ka kagiri to / shira ma yumi / okifushi sugosu / tsukihi naru ramu*
（Living like this, ever waiting — when shall I know the end? Like a taut bow, the days and months pass, as I rise and lie down in yearning.）
