*Shinobu yama / mata koto-kata ni / michi mo gana / furinuru ato wa / hito mo koso shire*
(Oh, that there were a path to Mount Shinobu — yet by another way! For the old-worn track is known to others all too well.)
By some means or other, her father, the Gonno-kami, discovered this poem and flew into a great rage. He sent his daughter off to the countryside, shut her away in a single room, and set watchers over her from every direction. The man — Kenkō — upon hearing of this, must have felt immeasurable grief. Life in the capital had become awkward and unbearable for him, and so he wandered off toward the eastern provinces. *Miyako nite / omoiyarare shi / Fuji no ne wo / nokiba no oka ni / idete miru kana*
(The peak of Fuji, which I had only imagined from afar while in the capital — now I step out upon the hill beyond these eaves and behold it with my own eyes.)
Composed at the house of Taira no Sadanao, Asomi (the Ōsaragi Lord of Mutsu), on an occasion when people were composing poems:
*Furusato / harenenu arashi ni / michi taete / tabine ni kakuru / yume no ukihashi*
(A storm that will not clear has cut the road to my old home — and I lie down to sleep on my travels, drifting across the floating bridge of dreams.)
