夜もすから雨もなみたもふるものを
なとかへりこぬわかれなるらむ
院へまいりたるに。めつらかにも覚しめくみ
てつかはす。このほとは世の中のまつり

の大覚寺殿にうつらせおはしまして。

夜もすがら 雨も涙も 降るものを
なとか帰り来ぬ 別れなるらむ
（法皇の）院へ参上したところ、格別にお情けをかけてくださり、お使いとしてお召し使いになった。このころは世の中の政務を、内裏（天皇）にお譲り申し上げなさって、嵯峨の大覚寺殿にお移りになられて、明け暮れはただ御行法（仏道の修行・行法）に、御心を入れなさって、

静かに籠もっておいでになる。その御所の御退屈しのぎに、兼好が詠んだ歌どもをご覧になりたいとのことで、お召しにあずかり、（歌を）献上するにあたってのその喜びを、清閑寺の僧正（道我）のもとに申し遣わした——
人知れず 朽ち果てぬべき 言の葉を
天つ空まで 風に散るらむ

*Yo mo sugara / ame mo namida mo / furu mono wo / nado ka kaeri ko nu / wakare naru ramu*
(All through the night, rain falls — as my tears fall. Why, then, is this a parting from which you cannot return?)
He presented himself at the Retired Emperor's palace, and was received with remarkable grace and affection, and was kept in service there. At this time, His Majesty had entrusted the governance of the realm to the Emperor in the inner palace, and had himself withdrawn to the Daikaku-ji Palace in Saga; morning and evening, he devoted himself wholly to his devotional practices (*gyōhō*), entering into them with deep spiritual earnestness,

and dwelt there in quiet seclusion. To alleviate the tedium of his retirement, His Majesty called for the poems that Kaneyoshi had composed and wished to peruse them. Upon receiving this summons and presenting his verses, Kaneyoshi sent word of his joy at this honor to the Sōjō (Dōga) of Seikan-ji——
*Hito shirezu / kuchi hate nu beki / koto no ha wo / amatsusora made / kaze ni chiru ramu*
(These leaves of words, which were destined to rot away unknown to any soul — how is it that the wind has carried them scattering all the way to the heavens above?)
