【右丁】
中納言資朝卿。右少辨弁俊基朝臣を。関
東より使の来りて。ゐて下りぬ。それより
なをし都の内。ありしにもあらす。うつ
りかはりて。なれみし人々もなくなりゆく
ことを
かたるへき友さへまれになるまゝに
いとゝむかしのしのはるゝかな
あるとき頓阿法師のかたへ。《圏点：よねたまへ｜◦》

《圏点：せにもほし｜◦》といふことを句の首尾（カミシモ）にをき
て。よみてつかはしける
よもすゝしねさめのかきほたまくらも
まそても秋にへたてなきかせ
頓阿も。此かへしをするとて。《圏点：よねはなし｜◦》
《圏点：せにすこし｜◦》といふを。また
よるもうしねたく我せこはてはこす
なをさりにたにしはしとひませ
現代語訳
【右丁】
中納言資朝卿、右少弁俊基朝臣を、関東より使者が来て、連れ下ってしまった。それよりなおも都の中は、かつてのようではなく、移り変わって、見慣れた人々もいなくなっていくことを——
語るべき友さへ稀になるままに
いとど昔の偲ばるるかな
あるとき頓阿法師のもとへ、「よねたまへせにもほし」という言葉を句の頭と末尾に置いて、詠んで遣わした——

よもすずし寝覚めの垣穂玉枕も
まそでも秋にへだてなき風
頓阿も、この返しをするとて、「よねはなしせにすこし」というのを、また——
よるも憂し寝たく我が背子はてはこず
なおざりにだにしばし訪ひませ

Messengers came from the Kantō and took away Middle Counselor Suketomo and the Right Minor Controller of the Left Toshimoto. From that time on, the capital was no longer as it had been — everything was shifting and changing, and those familiar faces one had known were disappearing one by one. On this:
*Katarubeki / tomo sae mare ni / naru mama ni / itodo mukashi no / shinobaruru kana*
(As even the friends with whom I might speak grow few, how much more deeply the past is longed for.)
Once, to the priest Ton'a, placing the words "yonetamahe se ni mo hoshi" (I would like some rice; I also want spending money) as the first and last syllables of a poem, he sent this verse:

*Yo mo suzushi / nezame no kakiho / tamamakura mo / masode mo aki ni / hedatenaki kaze*
(The night too is cool; the hedge at the hour of waking, the jeweled pillow, even these long sleeves — the wind of autumn makes no distinction among them.)
Ton'a, composing his reply, placed the words "yonetanashi se ni sukoshi" (I have no rice; I have a little spending money) likewise, and replied:
*Yoru mo ushi / netaku wagaseko / hate wa kozu / naozari ni dani / shibashi toi mase*
(The night too is dreary; my beloved, longing for sleep, comes not at all — visit me, if only briefly, even in passing.)
