やさしきふるまひなりとて。人わらひ
けり。おなし法師。母のおもひにこもり
居たる春。雪の降ける日つかはす
はかなくてふるにつけても淡雪の
消にし跡をさそしのふらむ
頓阿法師かへし
なけきわひともに消なていたつらに
ふるそはかなき春のあは雪

年を経て天の下た地なをりて
君も還幸なりまいらさせたまひにし
かは。中納言殿《割書：冷泉為藤卿》の御許へ
代々をへておさむる家の風なれは
しはしそさはく和哥のうら浪
花を見て
花の色は心のまゝに成にけり
ことしけき世をいとふしるしに
現代語訳
【右丁】
風雅なふるまいであると言って、人々は笑った。同じ法師（兼好）が、母の喪に籠もっていた春、雪の降る日に（頓阿へ）遣わした——
はかなくて降るにつけても淡雪の
消えにし跡をさぞ偲ぶらむ
頓阿法師の返し——
嘆き侘び共に消えなていたずらに
降るぞはかなき春の淡雪

年を経て、天下の情勢もなおり（安定し）、主上も還幸あそばされたので、中納言殿（割書：冷泉為藤卿）のお許へ——
代々を経ておさむる家の風なれば
しばしぞさわく和歌の浦波
花を見て——
花の色は心のままに成りにけり
ことしけき世を厭ふしるしに

People laughed, saying it was a charming and graceful exchange. The same priest (Kenkō), during a spring when he was in mourning seclusion for his mother, on a day when snow was falling, sent this to Ton'a:
*Hakanakute / furu ni tsukete mo / awayuki no / kie ni shi ato wo / sazoso shinoburamu*
(Fleeting as it is, each time the snow falls, how deeply you must be recalling the traces of her who has vanished, like the light snow that melts away.)
Ton'a's reply:
*Nageki wabi / tomo ni kie nate / itazura ni / furu zo hakanaki / haru no awayuki*
(Weary with grief, yet not melting away together — falling in vain, how fleeting is the light snow of spring.)

As years passed, the state of the realm settled once more, and the Emperor made his return to the capital. Kenkō sent this to the residence of Middle Counselor (marginal note: Reizei Tamefuji) —
*Yoyo wo hete / osamuru ie no / kaze nareba / shibashi zo sawaku / waka no uranami*
(As this household has governed the way of poetry across many generations, the waves upon the shore of *waka* will settle after a brief turbulence.)
Upon viewing the blossoms:
*Hana no iro wa / kokoro no mama ni / nari ni keri / kotoshigeki yo wo / itou shirushi ni*
(The color of the blossoms has become just as my heart wishes — a sign that I have turned away from this burdensome world.)
