浄辨律師の筑紫へまかり侍りしに
火燧をつかはすとて
うちすてゝわかるゝ道のはるけきに
したふおもひをたくへてそやる
奥深き山路にて。夘月の十日あまりに。
盛なる花を見て
今もさく花のところはありなから
過にし春をとふからそなき

山の住居も漸（ヤヽ）年へぬることを
さひしさもならひにけりな山里に
問来る人のいとはるゝまて
いかゝおもひけんまたあつまに行て
木曽の御坂のあたりにやすらひし
に。山のたくすまひ川のきよきな
かれに心とまりしかは。こゝにはおもひ
とまりぬへき所にこそとて

浄辨律師が筑紫へ下られる際に、火打ち石を遣わすとて——
打ち捨てて別るる道の遥けきに
慕ふ思ひをたぐへてぞやる
奥深き山路にて、卯月の十日あまりに、盛りなる花を見て——
今も咲く花のところはありながら
過ぎにし春を訪ふからぞなき

山の住居にも、漸く（やや）年が経ったことを詠んで——
淋しさも慣らひにけりな山里に
問ひ来る人のいとはるるまで
いかが思ったのか、また東（あずま）へ行って、木曽の御坂のあたりにしばらく逗留したところ、山のたぐいまれな住まい、川の清らかな流れに心が惹かれたので、「ここには思い留まるべき所にこそ」と言って——

When the Vinaya Master Jōben was departing for Tsukushi (Kyushu), Kenkō sent him a flint (as a parting gift) with this verse:
*Uchi sutete / wakaruru michi no / harukeki ni / shitau omoi wo / taguhete zo yaru*
(Though you cast aside and depart down a road stretching far away, I send this along with it, bundled together with my longing thoughts that would follow you.)
Deep in a mountain path, on a day past the tenth of the fourth month (卯月), upon seeing cherry blossoms in full bloom:
*Ima mo saku / hana no tokoro wa / arinagara / sugi ni shi haru wo / tou kara zo naki*
(Though there are still places where blossoms bloom even now, there are no visitors coming to inquire after the spring that has already passed.)

On having gradually spent years in a mountain dwelling:
*Sabishisa mo / narai ni keri na / yamazato ni / toi kuru hito no / itoraruru made*
(Even loneliness has become a habit — in this mountain village, to the point where those who come to visit become wearisome to me.)
For whatever reason, Kenkō went east again and lingered for a time around the mountain pass of Kiso. His heart was captivated by the remarkable mountain dwelling and the clear flowing waters of a river there, and he said, "This is surely a place where one could settle one's heart and remain," and so——
